Nelson Recreation Center

Built in 1970, the Nelson Recreation Center houses Tansey Gymnasium, home of the men's and women's basketball and men's and women's volleyball teams. Tansey Gymnasium is also used as a site for the Colleges of the Fenway's intramural program, recreational basketball and volleyball and outdoor sports teams' practice during preseason and inclement weather. There is a fitness center located on the third floor which contains Nautilus and free weights, as well as cardiovascular equipment. Administrative and coaches' offices are housed on the second and third floors.

Tansey Gymnasium features two sections, separated by a retractable curtain. The front half of the gymnasium features the main basketball and volleyball court, complete with two scoreboards, bleacher seating for 1,000, and four side baskets. The rear portion of the gymnasium contains a multi-purpose court, used for basketball, volleyball, and tennis, as well as a batting cage that drops down from the ceiling.

Over the past few years, Tansey Gymnasium has undergone some major improvements, which have only helped make the facility one of the finest in the Commonwealth Coast Conference:

  • In 1997, a new sound system was installed.

  • In 1998, new bleachers were installed, nearly doubling the seating capacity, as well as installing a second scoreboard, and constructing a second women's locker room. A new volleyball netting system placed the men's and women's volleyball teams, for the first time, on the main court.

  • In 2002, a new scoreboard was installed, replacing one that was nearly 17 years old.

  • In 2003, the floor was sanded down to the bare wood for the first time since the facility opened. Logos were added to the court in conjunction with re-painting (and eliminating not needed) lines.

  • In 2004, new, more energy-efficient lights were installed, as well as new shot clocks.

  • In 2005, a visiting men's locker room was constructed.

  • During the 2006-07 year, major renovations to Tansey Gymnasium took place, as the main portion of the playing floor was ripped up and replaced due to the floor settling over the four-decade life of the building.

  • In 2013 new scoreboards and shot clocks were installed.
