Baseball Sweeps SUNYIT in Doubleheader

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team's offense came alive, combining for 26 runs on 29 hits as the Leopards improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2009 with a sweep of SUNYIT (1-3). Wentworth posted a shutout in its second straight game with a 7-0 win in the opener before completing the sweep with a 19-2 win in the nightcap.

After neither team scored in the first inning of the opener, the Leopards got all the runs they would need in the second, scoring three times to a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Anthony Matera (Trumbull, Conn.) had an RBI triple, which scored classmate Jake Mailman (Medway, Mass.). Matera would score on a shallow sacrifice fly from sophomore Scott Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine) and freshman Sam McManus (Hopkinton, N.H.) scred on an error when senior Ryan Delgado (Wareham, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice.

The Leopards tacked on two runs in the second and third innings to account for all of the scoring. In the second, Mailman doubled home sophomore Joe Hulme (Tewksbury, Mass.) and would score on a Ouellette RBI single. The next inning saw Hulme deliver a two-run single.

Junior Dakota Baird (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) went five innings to pick up the win, allowing just one hit and striking out six. Freshman Corey Jerolmon (New Milford, Conn.) pitched a scoreless six with a strikeout in his collegiate debut while classmate Ryan Daniels (Bristol, R.I.) struck out two in a scoreless seventh in his collegiate debut.

At the plate Hulme, Mailman, and Matera each had two hits, with Hulme and Ouellette driving in two runs apiece.

Senior Michael Rose (Chatham, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) on eight hits, walking two and striking out three.

Game two saw the Black & Gold score two in the top of the first on an RBI single from Hulme and a sacrifice fly from Matera. Wentworth scored four times in the second to make it a 6-0 game, thanks to an RBI single from junior Jon Spitz (Hanover, Mass.) and three Wildcat errors that led to runs.

After junior Mike Mainello (Ithaca, N.Y.) had a two-run single to put SUNYIT on the board in the bottom of the second, the Leopards scored eight times in the fourth inning to break the game open. Freshman J.P. Dennehy (Danbury, Conn.) scored on a wild pitch, Ouellette drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, freshman Greg Confessore (West Hartford, Conn.) had an RBI single, Spitz drew a bases-loaded walk, Dennehy was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, junior Paul Dassau (Franklin, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch, and Hulme and Mailman each had RBI singles.

Wentworth closed out the scoring with a five-run sixth with freshman Matt McCormack (Contoocook, N.H.), McManus, freshman Johnny Ryan (Brant Rock, Mass.), Dassau, and Spitz each having an RBI.

Sophomore Justin Voytek (New Milford, Conn.) picked up the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits, while walking two and striking out three. Senior Ryan DeCotis (Nashua, N.H.) pitched a scoreless sixth, striking out two, while sophomore Chad Latham (East Hampton, Conn.) allowed one hit and struck out one in his collegiate debut in the seventh inning.

Ryan paced the offensive attack, going 5-for-5 with two runs scored. Dennehy had four hits, Mailman three, and Dassau, Spitz, and Hulme had a pair of hits apiece. Spitz and Hulme had three and two RBI, respectively.

Junior M.J. Hajec (Whitesboro, N.Y.) allowed six runs (three earned) on nine hits, while walking two and striking out three to take the loss for the Wildcats. Mainello was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
