SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshman pitcher Paul Vergara (Needham, Mass.) of the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team has been named the Commonwealth Coast Conference Rookie of the Week for games played the week of March 4-10.

Vergara made the most of his first collegiate start, spinning a one-hit shutout in the Leopards 3-0 win over Cazenovia on Sunday. In that game he gave up a second-inning single and kept runners on second and third to end both the second and fifth innings. He struck out eight batters, walked just one, and hit a pair of batters in the win.

Wentworth is off to its best start since the 2009 season as the Leopards are 4-0 and have outscored their opponents by a combined 50-5 score through the first four games. As a team the Black & Gold is batting .405, holding opponents to a .155 batting average, and has a 1.29 earned run average. The Leopards play Fitchburg State in a doubleheader on Wednesday morning.
