WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Sophomore Jake Mailman (Medway, Mass.) went 8-for-9 with seven RBI to help fuel the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team's sweep of Colby-Sawyer in a doubleheader played at Chain of Lakes Park. The Leopards took the first game, 17-3, and finished the sweep with an 8-5 win.
In the opener, the Leopards erupted for 11 runs in the top of the first inning, scoring 10 times before an out was recorded. Mailman had a two-run double and a two-run single in the inning, a frame that saw 15 batters come to the plate. Sophomore Joe Hulme (Tewksbury, Mass.) had a pair of hits in the inning, with Hulme, sophomore Anthony Matera (Trumbull, Conn.), freshman Sam McManus (Hopkinton, N.H.), senior Ryan Delgado (Wareham, Mass.) and juniors Paul Dassau (Franklin, Mass.) and Jon Spitz (Hanover, Mass.) each driving in a run.
The Chargers scored an unearned run in the second inning when sophomore Rob Wallace (Tewksbury, Mass.) doubled in junior Jake Szulak (Middleboro, Mass.), who had reached on a one-out error, before the two teams traded runs in the third. Mailman doubled in Hulme to make it 12-2 in the top of the inning and senior Cameron Knight (Cambridge, Mass.) drove in classmate Tyler Stotz (Amesbury, Mass.), who had led off with a triple, to make it 12-2.
Wentworth tacked on four runs in the fourth with Delgado lacing an RBI double, Dassau having an RBI single, and freshman J.P. Dennehy (Danbury, Conn.) driving in a run with a single. Spitz scored a run on a wild pitch.
The Chargers scored an unearned run in the sixth when Knight scored after junior Jon Wylie (Middleboro, Mass.) reached on an error. Wentworth rounded out the scoring with a single run in the seventh as senior Steffon Polius (Brooklyn, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice, plating sophomore Scott Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine).
Junior Ben Lewis (Middletown, R.I.) improved to 2-0, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits and struck out three in six innings of work. Freshman Johnny Ryan (Brant Rock, Mass.) struck out the side in the seventh. Mailman was 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI. Spitz, Hulme, Ouellette, McManus, Delgado, and Dassau each had two hits. Mailman added five RBI with Delgado and Dassau driving in two runs apiece.
Junior Alex Drost (West Windsor, Vt.) took the loss (0-2) for the Chargers, facing eight batters and allowing eight runs on seven hits. Knight had two hits in the loss.
Game two saw the Leopards take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Mailman doubled in Spitz and Matera scored Hulme on a sacrifice fly. The Leopards added single runs in the second and third as Spitz had an RBI single in the second and McManus had an RBI single in the third.
The Chargers cut the lead in half in the fourth when freshman Jeff Dunn (Bellingham, Mass.) delivered a two-run single, scoring Stotz and junior Andy Lapple (Newtown, Conn.).
Mailman delivered a one-out triple in the fifth and came home to score on a McManus single before Wentworth scored three times in the sixth as Dassau had an RBI double and came in to score when Hulme reached on an error and Mailman drove in Hulme.
Colby-Sawyer scored three unearned runs in the top of the seventh to make 8-5 as senior Matt Muldon (Saugus, Mass.) had a pinch-hit, RBI double, Wylie had an RBI groundout, and Stotz had an RBI single. The Chargers would have the tying run at the plate with two outs, but freshman Paul Vergara (Needham, Mass.) induced a groundout to end it.
Vergara improved to 2-0, allowing five runs (two earned) on eight hits, walked three, and struck out five. Mailman was 4-for-4 with two RBI, McManus was 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Spitz was 2-for-4.
