AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology wrapped up its annual spring trip by splitting a pair of games with Franklin & Marshall. The Leopards ran their win streak to four with a 6-5 win in the first game before the Diplomats earned the split with a 13-2 triumph.

Both teams scored in the first inning as Franklin & Marshall got on the board first when senior Aaron Gillette (Owings Mills, Md.) led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a senior Kevin Shields (Phoenix, Md.) groundout. Wentworth tied the game in the home half of the inning after freshman J.P. Dennehy (Danbury, Conn.) hit a one-out double and moved to third on a groundout by sophomore Joe Hulme (Tewksbury, Mass.). He scored on a sophomore Jake Mailman (Medway, Mass.) single.

Wentworth took a 2-1 lead with a run in the third when sophomore Scott Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine) singled in Dennehy, who had reached on an infield hit. The Leopards added a run in the fifth when Dennehy singled and came around to score on a Mailman RBI double and would score three times in the sixth to make it 6-1 as junior Paul Dassau (Franklin, Mass.) had an RBI double, Dennehy had an RBI single, and Hulme had a sacrifice fly.

Franklin & Marshall made it interesting in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs to pull within a run. Three of the runs came off the bat of Shields, who delivered a one-out, bases clearing double and senior Alex Vescera (Cranston, R.I.) had an RBI single. Both hits came with two outs before freshman Corey Jerolmon (New Milford, Conn.) came in and got a strikeout, leaving the bases loaded for his first collegiate save.

Junior Dakota Baird (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) improved to 2-0 on the year, pitching six strong innings as he allowed one run on eight hits, walked one, and struck out four. Freshman Ryan Daniels (Bristol, R.I.) and senior Ryan Conrad (East Bridgewater, Mass.) saw action in the seventh before Jerolmon closed the game out. Denney was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Mailman (two hits, two RBI) and Ouellette (two hits) also paced the offense.

Gillette and Vescera had three hits apiece for the Diplomats, with Shields recording two hits and driving in three and junior Joe Gallitto (Merrick, N.Y.) recording two hits. Sophomore Paul Giulio (Cockeysville, Md.) took the loss (0-2), allowing six runs (five earned) on 10 hits, walking one, and striking out three.

Game two was all Franklin & Marshall as the Diplomats jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first inning and never looked back. In the inning, Vescera had two RBI, with Shields, freshman Luke Seib (Chevy Chase, Md.), and Gillette also driving in runs.

The Diplomats added a pair in the second on a Shields RBI single and a freshman Matt Mezansky (Larchmont, N.Y.) RBI groundout and scored four more times in the third when Shields had a sacrifice fly, junior Avery Attinson (Montclair, N.J.) scored on a wild pitch, Vescera had an RBI single, and Seib had a sacrifice fly.

Wentworth got on the board in the fourth when Hulme and Mailman had back-to-back singles to lead off the inning and Hulme, who had moved to third on Mailman's hit, scored when Ouellette reached on a fielder's choice. The Leopards added a run in the seventh when senior Steffon Polius (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drew a bases-loaded walk.

Senior Brendan DeMond (Wilton, Conn.) improved to 2-1 on the year as he allowed one run on six hits and struck out three in four innings of work. Junior Mike Giannone (Garden City, N.Y.), junior Will Benenson (Upper Montclair, N.J.), Shields, and Vescera each had two hits with Shields and Vescera driving in four and three runs, respectively.

Sophomore Justin Voytek (New Milford, Conn.) took the loss (1-1) in three innings of work. Senior Ryan DeCotis (Nashua, N.H.) pitched the fourth, allowing two hits, while sophomore Chad Latham (East Hampton, Conn.) fanned four over the final two innings. Junior Jon Spitz (Hanover, Mass.) and Hulme each had two hits for the Black & Gold.
