QUINCY, Mass. – A four-run fifth inning snapped a one-all tie and lifted the Wentworth baseball team to a 5-1 win over Eastern Nazarene in the completion of a suspended game from Monday afternoon.
With the win, Wentworth improves to 9-6 overall and 1-3 in league play, while Eastern Nazarene falls to 6-11 (1-3).
Wentworth took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Anthony Matera (Trumbull, Conn.) belted a solo home run to right field.
Eastern Nazarene answered with an equalizer score in the home half of the third inning. Rocco Martinelli (Panama City, Panama) raked a one-out double down the left field line and came around to score on a single to center by Michael Chiaradio Jr. (Teaneck, N.J.) with two away.
The Leopards plated four runs in the fifth on two hits and three errors by the Lions to grab a 5-1 advantage. Ryan Delgado (Wareham, Mass.), Paul Dassau (Franklin, Mass.), Jon Spitz (Hanover, Mass.) and Jake Mailman (Medway, Mass.) all crossed the plate for the visitors in the frame.
Ben Lewis (Middletown, R.I.) improved to 3-0 for the Black & Gold, allowing one run on six hits, walking one, and striking out six batters. Six different players recorded single hits for Wentworth, which snapped a five-game losing streak and won a northern game for the first time since last April 14.
Brad Hampton (South Daytona, Fla.) tossed two innings and allowed one run. Matt Jayne (Quincy, Mass.) hurled five innings in his third appearance of the spring and struck out three batters while scattering two hits.
Martinelli paced Eastern Nazarene at the dish with a pair of base hits, a run scored and one stolen base. Chiaradio Jr. picked up one RBI on one hit in the game. E.J. Estrada (Alpharetta, Ga.), Ryan Garza (Elsa, Texas) and Jeremy Wagner (Oklahoma City, Okla.) also collected one hit on the day for the hosts.
Wentworth is at Salve Regina on Saturday for a CCC twinbill, while Eastern Nazarene steps out of conference on Thursday, hosting Fitchburg State.
