Baseball Swept at Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina swept its Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader against Wentworth Institute of Technology at Reynolds Field, Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks won 8-2 in the first game before capping the sweep with a 10-5 victory in the night cap.

In the first game the Seahawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the second inning. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, sophomore Sean Becker (Richmond, Va.) hit a sharp ground ball to the second baseman to get freshman Ryan Kelly (Waldwick, N.J.) out at second and bring around junior Nicholas Dell'Anno (Reading, Mass.) to give the Seahawks a 3-0 lead.

The Leopards were held off the base paths until the third inning when senior Ryan Delgado (Wareham, Mass.) reached on an error by the Seahawk rightfielder. Delgado's time on the bases was short lived, however, as junior Vincent Roth (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) got junior Paul Dassau (Franklin, Mass.) to ground in to an inning ending double play.

The Seahawks struck again in the fourth inning putting up two more runs extending their lead 5-0. With the bases loaded Becker again grounded out to short bringing home sophomore Matt Conroy (Philadelphia, Pa.). Junior Tyler Colby (Easton, Conn) collected his second RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly to left field that scored junior Anthony Conte (Georgetown, Mass.).

Wentworth finally broke through in the sixth inning on a two run single from sophomore Jake Mailman (Medway, Mass.) that drove in sophomore Joe Hulme (Tewksbury, Mass.) and junior Jon Spitz (Hanover, Mass.). Roth once again pitched himself out of trouble getting Scott Ouellette to ground out at first.

The Seahawks answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth bringing the score to its final 8-2. With two outs Kelly hit a triple down the right field line. Becker then hit a double to center field bringing Kelly in to score. Colby doubled into center field to bring home Becker, sophomore Joe Haley (North Kingston R.I.)  singled home Colby for the final run of the game.

Roth pitched his third 1-2-3 inning of the game getting Dassau to go down looking ending the game.

Similar to the first game Salve Regina struck first putting themselves on the scoreboard in the second inning. Dell' Anno was hit by a pitch and Sweenor doubled him to third. Conte grounded out to first base running in Dell' Anno to put the Seahawks ahead 1-0.

Wentworth took its only lead at the top of the third inning with a two run double from Mailman that scored Hulme and freshman J.P. Dennehy (Danbury, Conn.) to give the Leopards a 2-1 lead.

The Seahawks quickly answered with a two run inning of their own. Haley hit the second triple of the game for Salve Regina to score Becker. Becker came around to score on Di Sano's sacrifice fly to left to give Salve Regina a 3-2 lead, one that the Seahawks would not relinquish.

Salve Regina put the game at a reach with a seven run fifth inning extending its lead 10-2. The Seahawks strung together three straight singles for their first run of the inning. With one out and the bases loaded Mark Boland (Orange, Conn.) single to left field to score Di Sano and keep the bases loaded. After Kelly was hit by a pitch to score Dell' Anno, Becker reached on an infield single and a throwing error on the Leopards second baseman brought home three runs before Colby tripled to left to score Becker.

Wentworth attempted a comeback, but fell short as the Leopards were only to plate three runs in the inning. Mailman collected his third RBI of the day reaching on a fielder's choice that scored Spitz and loaded the bases. Sophomore Anthony Matera (Trumbull, Conn.) single threw the right side to score freshman Matt McCormack (Contoocook, N.H.). With the bases loaded and no outs Mike Schuermann (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) got two pop-ups before being relieved by Kevin Lambert (Fairfield, Conn.) walked the first batter he saw for the leopards final run of the game. Lambert got Dassau to line out to center to end the game and complete the double header sweep.
