BEVERLY, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team ran its win streak to three games on Saturday afternoon with a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader sweep over Gordon. The Leopards took the first game, 16-1, before holding on in game two for a 2-1 win.
Gordon struck first in the opening frame when freshman Corey Davey (Plymouth, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to open the game, went to second on a passed ball, and scored on a freshman Alex Potocki (New Fairfield, Conn.) RBI single.
The Leopards took the lead in the home half of the inning on a bases clearing, three-run double off the bat of freshman Sam McManus (Hopkinton, N.H.) and broke the game open with a 10-run second inning. In the second inning, senior Ryan Delgado (Wareham, Mass.) led off with a home run; senior Alex Wong (Lewiston, Maine) reached on an error, which allowed junior Paul Dassau (Franklin, Mass.) to score; sophomore Joe Hukme (Tewksbury, Mass.) had a pair of RBI singles, McManus delivered a two-run single; and Dassau and junior Jon Spitz were each hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Earlier in the inning, Spitz hit his 100th career hit, making him the 17th player in program history to reach that milestone.
Wentworth scored a run in the fourth when sophomore Jake Mailman (Medway, Mass.) delivered an RBI double, which scored Hulme, and the Leopards added a pair of runs in the fifth on Delgado's second home run of the game.
Wong picked up the win (1-0), allowing one unearned run, walking one, and striking out seven. McManus, Hulme, and Delgado had three hits each, with McManus driving in five runs, Delgado three, and Hulme two. Freshman J.P. Dennehy (Danbury, Conn.) rapped two hits in the win.
Senior Ben Davidson (Sterling, Mass.) was tagged with the loss (5-2) as he allowed 12 runs (six earned) on nine hits in just an inning and two thirds. Potocki, senior Brian Harrington (Shoreham, N.Y.), senior Dillon Coleman (Cromwell, Conn.), and freshman Eric Walker (Danvers, Mass.) had Gordon's hits.
In game two Wentworth took a 1-0 lead after an inning of play as Dennehy delivered an RBI single, scoring Wong, who had reached on a one-out single. Gordon had a chance to tie the game in the second, but left the bases loaded.
The Leopards took a 2-0 lead in the third when Spitz led off with an infield hit, went to second on an errant throw on a pickoff attempt, and moved to third on a Wong single before scoring on a Hulme double.
Gordon trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the fifth as senior Geoff Brown (East Moriches, N.Y.) led off with a walk and went to third on a ground-rule double from Walker. An RBI groundout by sophomore Carlos Pichardo (La Romana, Dominican Republic) scored Brown and moved Walker to third. However, the Fighting Scots were unable to tie the game as Davidson delivered a fly ball to right field and Walker was tagged out when he attempted to tag up.
In the seventh, Walker drew a one-out walk, but the Leopards stranded him at first with a strikeout and a fly out.
Junior Ben Lewis (Middletown, R.I.) improved to 6-1 on the year as he allowed one run on four hits, walked three, and struck out three in six innings of work. Senior Ryan DeCotis (Nashua, N.H.) picked up his second save in as many games, allowing just the one walk in the seventh. At the plate, Wong led a balanced attack with a pair of hits.
Freshman Ryan Block (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) took the loss (1-1), allowing two runs on seven hits, walking two, and striking out two.
With the wins the Leopards improve to 14-13 overall and 4-10 in CCC play. Wentworth closes out the regular season at Curry on Saturday, April 27. Gordon saw its losing streak extend to five games, falling to 16-15 (5-9). The Fighting Scots are at MIT on Tuesday.
