Baseball Falls to Castleton in Regular-Season Finale

Baseball Falls to Castleton in Regular-Season Finale

CASTLETON, Vt. – Joe Borowski hit a pair of home runs and drove in four runs to lead the offense while seven pitchers combined to hold Wentworth to just seven hits and two unearned runs as Castleton defeated the Leopards, 6-2, in the regular-season finale for both teams. The Spartans ran their record to 26-11 on the year while Wentworth fell to 15-15.

After a scoreless first inning, Wentworth got on the board in the top of the second. With two outs, Scott Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine) singled to left field and Ryan Delgado (Wareham, Mass.) followed with a walk. Paul Dassau (Franklin, Mass.) then hit a grounder to third, but the throw was off the mark and both runners came in to score. Connor Long ended the threat by picking Dassau off at second for the third out.

The Spartans finally broke through in the bottom of the third. Cameron Curler worked a walk and Mat Pause followed with a single to left. Tyler Lord reached on a fielder's choice, as the throw to get Curler out at third wasn't in time. With the bases loaded Ryan Zielinski hit a chopper to short, and Curler was able to score while Lord was forced out at second. Joe Borowski followed with a blast over the field in left for a three-run homer to extend the Castleton lead to 4-2.

One inning later, Macyn Clifford led off with a single and then stole second. He advanced to third on a fly out by Allen White and scored on a groundout by Curler to make it 5-2.

In the fifth, Borowski went yard for the second time, blasting a solo shot to extend the Spartan advantage to 6-2.

Wentworth loaded the bases in the eighth with two outs, but Matt Ravey came on and induced a groundout to end the comeback attempt.

Long received the start for Castleton and went the first 3.0 innings, giving up three hits and two unearned runs while striking out two batters to earn his second win of the season. He was one of seven pitchers to see action for the Spartans, along with Derek Osborne, Conner Johnson, Adam Greenlese, Tim Smith, Ravey and Nate Swahn.

Allen White and Mat Pause each added a pair of hits to help the cause as Castleton finished with ten in the game.

Jon Spitz (Hanover, Mass.) went 3-for-5 to lead Wentworth, while Ouellette had a pair of hits. Paul Vergara (Needham, Mass.) was saddled with the loss after going 2.0 innings and giving up five runs. Dakota Baird (Bermua Dunes, Calif.) got the start, allowing a pair of hits and striking out two over the first two innings. Sophomore Justin Voytek (New Milford, Conn.), freshman Corey Jerolmon (New Milford, Conn.) and senior Ryan DeCotis (Nashua, N.H.) also pitched for the Black & Gold.

Wentworth opens Commonwealth Coast Conference play of Thursday at Endicott at 3:00 p.m. Castleton will host the North Atlantic Conference Tournament this weekend and will face Thomas in the opening round on Friday at 11:00.
