WENHAM, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team dropped a pair of Commonwealth Coast Conference games on Saturday as the Leopards were defeated by Gordon, 3-1 and 7-4.
With the losses, the Leopards slip to 7-8 overall and 0-4 in CCC play while the Fighting Scots improve to 7-6 (2-2).
In the first game Wentworth took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning as back-to-back doubles by juniors Joe Hulme (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Jake Mailman (Medway, Mass.) got the visitors on the board. The Leopards had runners at second and third with one out, however, would not push more than one run across.
Gordon took a 2-1 lead in the home half of the inning when freshman Dawson Tefft (West Granby, Conn.) singled in junior Jesse Amaya (South Gate, Calif.). Tefft, who took second on the throw, went to third on a single by junior Alonzo Martinez (El Paso, Texas) and scored on a balk.
The Fighting Scots added an insurance run in the fifth when Amaya delivered an RBI single, which scored sophomore Eric Walker (Danvers, Mass.), who had a one-out single.
In the seventh inning Wentworth had the tying run at the plate with one out, however junior Wesley Arning (Mufreesboro, Tenn.), who had come on in the top of the sixth inning, got a flyout and a strikeout to end the game.
Sophomore Scott Hall (Weymouth, Mass.) improved to 1-1 as he allowed one run on five hits and struck out six in five innings. Arning yielded one hit and a walk while striking out one in two innings to pick up his first save of the season.
Mailman was 3-for-3 with an RBI to pace the Leopards. Freshman Zach Bernier (North Dartmouth, Mass.) took the loss (1-2) as he allowed three runs on six hits, walked one, and struck out five.
The nightcap saw Gordon take a 1-0 lead in the first inning as junior Mark Fitzgerald (Camarillo, Calif.) doubled in Walker who had led off with a single. Wentworth took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second when junior Scott Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine) reached on an error, allowing freshman Jordan Burst (Jackson, N.J.) to score. With the bases still loaded, senior Paul Dassau (Franklin, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly which scored sophomore Sam McManus (Hopkinton, N.H.).
Gordon used a three-run second to take a 4-2 lead as junior Carlos Pichardo (La Romana, Dominican Republic) had an RBI single, Walker reached on an error which allowed sophomore Alex Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.) to score, and Amaya had an RBI single.
In the third inning Wentworth tied the game at 2-all, thanks to a two-run single from Burst, which scored Mailman and freshman Christian Ferri (Bloomfield, N.J.). Ferri had led off the inning with a walk and Mailman delivered a one-out single.
The Fighting Scots took a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning on an RBI single from Tefft, which scored Amaya and added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth as sophomore Cody Davey (Plymouth, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly and Walked had an RBI single.
Wentworth had runners on second and third with one out in the seventh, however Fitzgerald got back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
Walker was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI while Amaya and Smith had two hits each. Freshman Matt Amore (Pequannock, N.J.) picked up the win, allowing zero runs on two hits and striking out four in 2.2 innings.
