Baseball Snaps Losing Streak With Sweep of Curry

MILTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team snapped a six-game losing streak and picked up its first win since returning from Florida as the Leopards swept Curry, 11-2 and 11-4 in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon.

With the wins the Leopards even their record at 9-9 overall and pick up their first two conference wins to stand at 2-4 while Curry drops to 6-15 (1-9).

Wentworth plated two quick runs in the opener, thanks to a first-inning, two-run single from freshman Jordan Burst (Jackson, N.J.) that brought home junior Joe Hulme (Tewksbury, Mass.) and junior Anthony Matera (Trumbull, Conn.). Curry pulled even in the bottom of the second, as a double from freshman Nick Crivello (Millville, Mass.) scored sophomores Tim Lathrop (Colchester, Conn.) and Philip Perez (West Covina, Calif.).

From that point forward, it was all Leopards, who scored nine runs combined in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. The fifth-inning highlight was a two-run single from sophomore Johnny Ryan (Brant Rock, Mass.) that brought home Burst and Matera. A four-run top of the seventh gave Wentworth a nine-run cushion, thanks in large part to a two-RBI base hit from junior Jake Mailman (Medway, Mass.).

Mailman, Ryan and Hulme each collected a pair of hits for the visitors. Mailman (three), Burst (two) and Ryan (two) all drove in multiple runs. Senior Ben Lewis (Middletown, R.I.) went the distance for the win, tossing seven innings, allowing five hits, no walks, and two earned runs while striking out four.

Freshman Mike Reiher (Ramsey, N.J.) took the loss for the Colonels, surrendering three hits, three walks, and five unearned runs while fanning two.

In the nightcap, the Leopards struck quickly again, as a Burst single plated senior Jon Spitz (Hanover, Mass.) in the first frame, and a Spitz double in the second inning brought junior Scott Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine). Curry cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second, with freshman Cam Douglas (Milford, N.H.) coming home on a Lathrop sacrifice fly.

Wentworth broke the game open with a seven-run third inning. The offensive outburst featured two-RBI hits from Matera and Hulme. Curry got a pair back in the fourth, thanks to a two-run home run from freshman Ben Carrasco (San Francisco, Calif.), making the score 9-3. The Leopards added two more in the fifth, while the Colonels tallied one more in their half of that inning to account for the 11-4 final.

Matera drove home three, followed by Hulme and Mailman with two RBI apiece. Freshman Aaron Denis (Dover, N.H.) tossed a complete game to pick up the victory. He allowed eight hits, two walks, and four earned runs, while striking out three.

In addition to Carrasco, Curry got multi-hit efforts from Douglas and junior R.J. McCann (Brockton, Mass.). Freshman Vincent LoPriore (Boston, Mass.) absorbed the loss, tossing 2.1 innings and allowing seven hits, three walks, and six earned runs. He struck out two.

The Leopards travel to Salve Regina in a conference twin bill tomorrow starting at 12:00 p.m. The Colonels return to action on Monday, hosting Fitchburg State in a non-league contest starting at 3:00 p.m.
