BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Junior Bobby Rosano's (North Reading, Mass.) one-out single in the bottom of the seventh capped a four-run rally that lifted Massachusetts Maritime to a 5-3 non-league college baseball victory over Wentworth Thursday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.
The host Buccaneers (9-9) trailed 3-0 heading into their half of the seventh, but singles by freshman Aidan Desrosiers (North Attleboro, Mass.) and sophomore Matt King (Scituate, Mass.), coupled with a wild pitch and a walk to sophomore Everett Walsh (Marstons Mills, Mass.), loaded the bases for Massachusetts Maritime, and junior Greg Downs's (Marshfield, Mass.) infield grounder was thrown away to allow two runs to score. Freshman Alex Rozak's (Plymouth, Mass.) pinch-hit RBI infield single evened matters and set the stage for Rosano, who gave the hosts the lead for good by lofting a 1-1 pitch to left field. The Buccaneers added an insurance run in the eighth when freshman Jonah Olsen (Falmouth, Mass.) reached on a two-base error, advanced to third on King's sacrifice and scored on Walsh's sacrifice fly to right to account for the final score.
Wentworth (11-12), which was playing in its third game in a 15-hour span, jumped out to a 2-0 second inning lead when junior Scott Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine) scored on a wild pitch that was followed by a run-scoring single off the bat of senior Jon Spitz (Hanover, Mass.), and Wentworth extended that margin to 3-0 in the fifth when junior Joe Hulme (Tewksbury, Mass.) drew a lead-off walk, stole second and scored on junior Jake Mailman's (Medway, Mass.) RBI single to right, setting the stage for Massachusetts Maritime's late inning heroics and its first win over the visitors dating back to a 6-4 triumph in the ECAC Division III New England semifinals on May 10, 2008.
Senior Brendan O'Kane (Pocasset, Mass.) rapped out three hits on the day for the Buccaneers, who also received a pair of hits from Desrosiers. Sophomore Kyle Kennedy (Woodbury, Conn.) allowed one hit and struck out seven over the final four innings to improve to 2-0 on the season in relief for Massachusetts Maritime, as junior Tyler Smith (Bellingham, Mass.) fanned five over the first four-plus frames for the hosts. Spitz rapped out two of the Leopards' six hits in the setback, as freshman Chris Hayes (Medford, Mass.) allowed four unearned runs and struck out five over 6 1/3 innings to even his record at 1-1 on the spring for Wentworth.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Lasell in a non-league outing on Friday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Wentworth heads to Dudley, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Nichols in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader that begins at Noon.
