Baseball Sweeps CCC Weekly Awards

BOSTON, Mass. – After splitting with league-leading Endicott in its final Commonwealth Coast Conference regular-season games of the season, the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team swept the CCC weekly awards as junior catcher Jake Mailman (Medway, Mass.) was named the league's player of the week, freshman Aaron Denis (Dover, N.H.) was named the league's pitcher of the week, and freshman Zack Bernier (North Darmouth, Mass.) earned rookie of the week honors.

Mailman drove in both runs in the Leopards' 2-1 win over the Gulls in game two. His first-inning RBI single gave the Leopards a 1-0 lead before his first career home run gave the Black & Gold a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. He reached base safely in all four appearances with two hits and two intentional walks and was 2-for-5 in the doubleheader.

In 29 games Mailman is batting .337 (30-for-89) with 11 doubles, one home run, 13 runs scored, and a team-high 27 RBI. Behind the plate he has thrown out 12 of 40 baserunners who have tried to steal.

Denis, who named the league's rookie of the week on March 10, earns the league's pitcher of the week honor for the first time this season. Working 5.1 innings in the Leopards' 2-1 win over Endicott, he limited the CCC's top-hitting and top-scoring offense to just one run while scattering eight hits and striking out two to pick up his team-best fifth win of the season.

In seven appearances (six starts), Denis is 5-2 with a 2.45 earned run average. Denis had made six starts with four complete games and has struck out 21 batters in 44 innings of work. His 2.45 average is presently the fourth-lowest in a season in program history.

Bernier needed 13 pitches to record his first collegiate save, with 11 of those going for strikes. Entering the game in relief of Denis in the sixth inning with one out and the potential game-tying run on second, he got a flyout and a strikeout to end the inning and then set the top three Gull hitters down in order in the bottom of the inning to pick up the save.

In seven appearances (six starts) this season, Bernier is 2-4 with a save and a 4.86 earned run average. He has pitched three complete games and has struck out 22 batters in 33.1 innings of work.

With three regular-season games remaining, the Leopards sit at 14-15 overall and finished CCC play with a 7-9 mark. Wentworth presently sits in sixth place in the CCC with the top six teams qualifying for post-season play, which begins on Thursday, May 1.
