Baseball Holds on to Defeat Babson

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Freshman Tim Elrick (Plymouth, Mass.) went 3-for-3 with two RBI, and classmate Tyler Weninger (Chandler, Ariz.) doubled and drove in a pair of runs as visiting the Wentworth Institute of Technology defeated Babson College, 5-4, in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Govoni Field.

With the win, Wentworth is now 12-9 overall, while Babson drops to 11-14 on the year.

Sophomore Jimmy Temte (Northborough, Mass.) went 2-for-3 and scored twice for the Leopards. Junior Corey Jerolmon (New Milford, Conn.) earned his first win of the season, allowing just two earned runs on six hits while striking out a pair over six innings of work.

Senior Sean MacPhee (Framingham, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with and an RBI to lead the Beavers. Sophomore Owen Shea (Northborough, Mass.) and senior Dillon Gonzalez (Beverly, Mass.) both doubled, while sophomore Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.) and freshman Adam Ayala (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) each drove in a run.

Wentworth took advantage of two errors to grab a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Babson responded with a pair of runs in the last of the second. The Beavers used a pair of walks around a single by sophomore Joe Barry (Stoneham, Mass.) to load the bases with nobody out. MacPhee drove in Halpin with a single to left, and Barry came home on a ground out by Ayala to make it 2-1.

The Leopards answered with two runs in the third, and another in the fourth to go ahead 4-2. Elrick started the third with a single and senior Anthony Matera (Trumbull, Conn.) walked before both came home on a one-out double by Weninger. Temte got hit with a 3-2 pitch to open the fourth and came in on a sacrifice fly by Elrick to make it a two-run game.

Babson cut its deficit in half without the benefit of a hit in the last of the fourth as junior George Crowley (Watertown, Mass.) reached on an error and later scored on an RBI ground out by Ayala. Wentworth regained a two-run edge an inning later though, as Temte led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and then scored on Elrick's two-out base hit to left center making it 5-3.

The Beavers put runners on first and second with one out in the sixth, but Jerolmon worked out of the jam with a pop up to first and a strikeout. Freshman Bram Grooten (Eindhoven, Netherlands) worked around a lead-off walk in the seventh, and the Beavers were unable to take advantage of a Leopards error in the eighth, as senior Justin Voytek (New Milford, Conn.) kept a pair of Babson baserunners from scoring.

Weiss led off the ninth with a walk and advanced to third on back-to-back ground outs before scoring an RBI single by Halpin. Wentworth junior Johnny Ryan (Brant Rock, Mass.) escaped further damage by inducing a game-ending pop up to earn his first save of the season.

Freshman Teddy Carey (Upton, Mass.) suffered the loss for Babson despite a complete-game effort. He allowed four earned runs on eight hits while recording a career-high 10 strikeouts.

Wentworth resumes Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Saturday as the Leopards host Nichols in a doubleheader at Trinity Stadium in Haverhill, Mass., at 4:00. Babson faces Southern Maine tomorrow at 3:30.
