Baseball Falls in Season Finale

MILTON, Mass. – Junior John Arens (Milton, Mass.) recorded five hits while senior Thomas Fitzpatrick (South Boston, Mass.) and freshman David Griffin (Hanover, Mass.) picked up complete-game victories as the Curry College baseball team swept a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader from Wentworth, taking the first game 13-1 and the nightcap, 4-3.

With the wins the Colonels improve to 18-11 overall and 9-5 in CCC play while the Leopards end their season at 14-16 (6-10).

Curry, the visiting team on the scoreboard, wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in game one as the Colonels sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven times. Junior Philip Perez (West Covina, Calif.), sophomore Alex McLean (Eliot, Maine), and Arens each had RBI singles, senior Derek Pizarro (Cambridge, Mass.) had a squeeze bunt, and sophomore Nick Cirvello (Millville, Mass.) drew a bases-loaded walk.

The Colonels plated a run in the second on a Pizarro RBI single and took a 9-0 lead in the fifth when McLean was caught in a rundown trying to steal and Pizarro would score on the play.

Wentworth got its lone run in the sixth. Senior Jake Mailman (Medway, Mass.) led off with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. After a ground out moved him to third, freshman Tyler Weninger (Chandler, Ariz.) struck out but went to first on a passed ball, allowing Mailman to score.

Curry added four runs in the top of the seventh with three of them coming on a bases-clearing double off the bat of freshman Evan Morris (Pembroke, Mass.).

Fitzpatrick improved to 5-1 on the year as he allowed one run on seven hits and struck out six. Arens was 3-for-4 with an RBI while Morris was 2-for-5 with three RBI, Pizarro has 2-for-3 with two RBI, and freshman William De La Cruz (Bronx, N.Y.) had a pair of hits.

Freshman Robby Sheldon (Dover, N.H.) took the loss (3-3) as he lasted just two-thirds of an inning, allowing seven runs (four earned) on three hits. Senior Dakota Baird (Bermuda Bunes,Calif.) allowed two runs on six hits and struck out seven in 4.1 innings while senior Justin Voytek (New Milford, Conn.) allowed four runs on four hits in the final two innings. Mailman and senior Scott Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine) had two hits each with both of Ouellette's going for doubles.

Game two saw Curry take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first with Arens scoring on an error and Cirvello driving in two with a single. The Leopards tied the game in the bottom of the inning as sophomore Jordan Burst (Jackson, N.J.) and Ouellette each had an RBI single and Burst came into score when junior Johnny Ryan (Brandt Rock, Mass.) reached on an error.

In the third inning Curry would take a 4-3 lead when freshman Zach Bowden (Taunton, Mass.) drew a two-out walk and after an infield single from freshman Anthony Sciaudone (York, Maine), would score on an error.

The Leopards would leave two runners on in both the fifth and sixth innings, however were unable to tie the game.

Griffin improved to 4-1 after allowing three runs on 10 hits and striking out eight. Arens and Sciaudone, and senior Tanner Givens (Hamden, Conn.) had two hits each.

Weninger took the loss (1-2), allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits and striking out a pair. He also had two hits along with sophomore Christian Ferri (Bloomfield, N.J.), senior Joe Hulme (Tewksbury, Mass.), and Ouellette.
