Baseball Opens Conference Play With Split at Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. – Sophomore Ryan Obin (Plymouth, Mass.) improved to 4-0 on the season to help the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team pick up a 2-1 victory over Roger Williams in the first game of a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader. The Hawks gained a split with a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

Game One:  Wentworth 2, Roger Williams 1
Wentworth grabbed a pair of runs in its first at bat as senior Christina Ferri (Bloomfield, N.J.) led off with a double and scored after classmate Jordan Burst (Jackson, N.J.) singled and Ferri scored on an error. Burst went to second on a single from junior Tyler Weninger (Chandler, Ariz.). Weninger was erased when junior Tim Elrick (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice and Burst scored just before Elrick was caught stealing.

The Leopards held a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth when the Hawks sliced the lead in half. With one out sophomore Tyler Brett (Hebron, Conn.) walked and went to second on a single from freshman Justin Stone (Blackstone, Mass.). After a fly out, Brett came around to score on a single from freshman Ryan McDermott (Wrentham, Mass.), however the tying run was gunned down at the plate. The was the first earned run Obin had allowed all season.

Obin set down the final six batters he faced, including getting a strikeout to end the game.

In improving to 4-0, Obin's ERA sits at 0.36. He scattered five hits, walked four, and struck out four in his second complete game of the season. Offensively Weninger had two of the Black & Gold's five hits in the game.

Junior Sam Bennett (Andover, Mass.) fell to 1-1 with the loss. Stone had two of Roger Williams' five hits.

Game Two:  Roger Williams 2, Wentworth 1
After a scoreless first inning, the hosts took a 1-0 lead when sophomore Eli Camner (Hamden, Conn.) hit a one-out home run to left center. Roger Williams held the lead until the top of the fourth inning when Weninger hit his third home run of the season.

In the bottom of the fifth, Camner singled and stole second. He was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Anthony Dominguez (Chester, N.J.) and, on a squeeze attempt, was out trying to score. Senior Aaron Denis (Dover, N.H.) ended the inning by getting a strikeout.

Wentworth attempted to take the lead in the top of the seventh as Weninger singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from senior Jimmy Temte (Northborough, Mass.). A single from freshman Owen Swanson (New Milford, Conn.) moved Weninger to third, however he would be out on a squeeze attempt and a ground out would end the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, freshman Danny Roth (West Hartford, Conn.) drew a two-out walk and scored the winning run on a double by Camner.

Senior Jimmy Hamilton (Schenectady, N.Y.) picked up the win (3-1) in relief as he allowed two hits in two innings of work. Senior George Lund (West Hartford, Conn.) pitched the first five innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out two. Camner had three of the Hawks' four hits.

Denis suffered his first loss of the season (2-1) as he allowed two runs on four hits, walked one, and struck out four in 6.2 innings. Weninger had two of the Leopards' four hits.

Wentworth, which has eclipsed last season's win total, sits at 11-4 overall and 1-1 in CCC play. The Leopards are at Mass. Maritime on Thursday.
