Baseball Bounces Back to Split With Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. – Senior Aaron Denis (Dover, N.H.) improved to 3-1 on the season with a complete-game effort as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team bounced back to earn a split with Gordon, 13-1, after falling in game one, 1-0, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The games were played at J. Tec White Field with the Leopards batting as the "home" team.

Game One:  Gordon 1, Wentworth 0
The two sides combined for only six hits in the seven-inning affair. Gordon parlayed a quiet first two innings into a two-out rally in the top of the third inning as Dean Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.) and Addison Tarr (Oxnard, Calif.) to set up a single by Chris Leavitt (East Bridgewater, Mass.). On the play, both runners advanced an extra base on a throwing error.

Gordon's rookie starter Morgan Hyde (Thomson, Ga.) threw a perfect four and two-thirds innings before junior Tom Elrick (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) spoiled the achievement with a single in the bottom of the fifth.

The Leopards were able to get a runner in scoring position in each the sixth and seventh frames, including placing the tying run on third in the bottom of the seventh, but Hyde was able to pitch his way out of the jam both times to earn his second win of the year (2-2). Leavitt had two of Gordon's four hits.

Ryan Obin (Plymouth, Mass.) was tagged for his first loss of the year (4-1) in three innings of work as allowed one unearned run on three hits and struck out two. Leo Coehlo (Marlborough, Mass.) pitched the final four innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six. Elrick and sophomore Jake Smith (Orange, Conn.) had hits for Wentworth.

Game Two:  Wentworth 13, Gordon 1
Wentworth bounced back from the loss in game one to score two runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. Tyler Weninger (Chandler, Ariz.) doubled in his first of three RBI in the game and would score on a sacrifice fly by senior Jimmy Temte (Northborough, Mass.).

A pair of Fighting Scot errors in the second inning helped lead to a six-run frame for the Black & Gold as the middle of the lineup, consisting of Jordan Burst (Jackson, N.J.), Temte and Weninger did most of the damage as Burst had a sacrifice fly, Weninger had a two-run single and scored a run, and Temte singled and eventually came around to score when Elrick reached on an error. Ross Golebiewski (Lyme, Conn.) also drove in a run with a single.

The Leopards put the game out of reach with three more runs in the fourth inning as Owen Swanson (New Milford, Conn.) and Temte each scored on wild pitches and Elrick scored on an error. Swanson also had a RBI single in the fifth and Golebiewski grounded out to drive in a run as part of a two-run fifth.

Demers, who finished with two hits for the Fighting Scots, knocked in Gordon's lone run in the seventh.

Wentworth piled up 11 hits with Weninger and Temte combining for four hits, six runs scored and four RBI. Owen Swanson (New Milford, Conn.) had a game-high three hits.

Denis allowed one run on five hits and struck out seven batters in the win.

Wentworth is at Western New England on Sunday.
