BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Jake Weiss (Irvine, Calif.) went 3-for-5 with three runs scored to help the Babson College baseball team defeat Wentworth Institute of Technology, 14-4, in non-conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Govoni Field.
With its sixth consecutive win, Babson is now 19-13 overall, while Wentworth slips to 14-13 on the year.
Senior Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.), juniors Ryan Arena (Yorktown, Heights, N.Y.) and David Lennon (Windermere, Fla.) and sophomore Connor Gill (Sterling, Mass.) all doubled and drove in two runs for the Beavers. Freshman Sean Harrington (Walpole, Mass.) had a pair of doubles in his only two at-bats, while classmate Matthew Valente (Wyckoff, N.J.) went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored in the win. Sophomore Brian McHale (Ramsey, N.J.) also walked twice and scored three times for Babson.
Seniors Jordan Burst (Jackson, N.J.) and Jimmy Temte (Northborough, Mass.) both had two hits for the Leopards.
Wentworth took a 2-1 lead on sophomore Jake Smith's (Orange, Conn.) RBI single in the top of the fourth before the Green and White scored five runs in the bottom of the frame. Lennon plated a pair of runs with a double to left center and then scored on a base hit by Weiss to make it 4-2. Halpin drove in Weiss with a single through the right side and McHale came around on a passed ball to extend the margin to 6-2.
The fifth inning saw Gill hit a two-run double to the wall in left center and Halpin followed with an RBI double down the right field line to make it 9-2. McHale scored on an RBI groundout one batter later and Halpin came home on a wild pitch to push the Beavers' lead to 11-3.
The Leopards got a run back as sophomore Dan Cole (Kingston, Mass.) drove in junior Tim Elrick (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) with one out in the sixth, but Babson tacked on three more insurance in the late innings for the final margin.
Freshman Zack Sette (Franklin, Mass.) picked up his first career win for the Beavers.
Junior Robby Sheldon (Dover, N.H.) dropped to 0-4 on the year for Wentworth after giving up six runs on six hits in 4.0 innings.
Both teams return to action on Saturday at 12 p.m. as Babson hosts Wheaton to begin a three-game conference tournament semifinal series, while the Leopards take on Nichols in a twin bill in Brockton.
