Baseball Goes on the Offensive in Sweep of Anna Maria

AUBURNDALE, Fla – Senior Tyler Weninger (Chandler, Ariz.) went 6-for-7 on the day, including recording his 100th career hit and junior Mike Callagee (Emerson, N.J.) pitched six shutout innings to notch his first win of the season as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team 25-run, 26-hit attack to sweep Anna Maria. The Leopards took the first game, 14-3, before closing out their spring break trip with an 11-2 win in the nightcap.

GAME ONE:  Wentworth 14, Anna Maria 3
Wentworth jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to RBI singles from Weninger and senior Tim Elrick (Plymouth, Mass.). Freshman Aidan French (Chicago, Ill.) hit a one-out double and came in on Weninger's single while Weninger came in on Elrick's single. The Leopards tacked four runs onto their lead an inning later as sophomore Owen Swanson (New Milford, Conn.) scored on an error, Weninger had an RBI double, Elrick delivered an RBI single, and junior Ross Golebiewski (Lyme, Conn.).

French reached on an error with two outs in the third, which scored Swanson and gave Wentworth a 7-0 lead and he eventually came around to score on a wild pitch which made it 8-0. Anna Maria scored two runs in the bottom of the inning as freshman Jason Shell (Sandwich, Mass.) and freshman Justin Robbins (Leominster, Mass.) each had RBI singles.

A four-run fourth was highlighted by a two-run single from Weninger, which gave him career hit number 100 and he became the 22nd player in program history to reach the century mark. Litwin and Elrick each drove in runs with RBI singles in the frame. The bottom of the sixth saw the AMCATS score on a sophomore Jacob Zamora (Alachua, Fla.) single made it 12-3 before Wentworth scored twice in the top of the seventh as freshman Tommy Madigan (Valley Falls, N.Y.) led off the inning being hit by a pitch and with two outs came around to score on a wild pitch while freshman Craig Rich (Billerica, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch after hitting a two-out single.

Sophomore Ryan Obin (Plymouth, Mass.) went the distance to even his record at 1-1. He allowed three runs on five hits and struck out nine batters in the win. Weninger was 3-for-4 with three RBI, Elrick was 3-for-3 with three RBI, and Litwin was 2-for-5 as part of a 14-hit attack.

Freshman Andrew Rodrigues (East Providence, R.I.) fell to 0-2 after allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits in an inning of work. Five different players had hits for Anna Maria.

GAME TWO:  Wentworth 11, Anna Maria 2
The offense picked up where it left off to start game two as Wentworth scored three times in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Elrick led off with a single and went to second on a Golebiewski single. Freshman Cole Fritz (Peoria, Ariz.) reached on a fielder's choice when Golebiewski went to second on an error which allowed Elrick to score. Litwin singled in Golebiewski and Swanson hit a sacrifice fly which scored Fritz. The Leopards added a single run in the third when Weninger led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a junior Andrew Elliott (Rockland, Mass.) double.

Anna Maria had runners at the corners with one out in the fourth and looked to get on the scoreboard. When sophomore Phillip Antonucci (Revere, Mass.) lifted a fly ball to right. Golebiewski made the catch and fired a strike home to senior Bryon Kucharski (East Haven, Conn.) to complete the double play and keep the shutout intact. An inning later, the Black & Gold scored two runs when Weninger, who tripled with one out, scored when Elrick reached on an error and Elliott, who followed Weninger's triple with a walk, came around to score on a Kucharski RBI single.

Wentworth broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning as the Leopards took advantage of two AMCAT errors and a passed ball and got an RBI single from Elliott. Anna Maria scored two runs in the top of the seventh as freshman Jake Crevier (Ware, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch and freshman Jason Shell (Sandwich, Mass.) had an RBI single.

Callagee evened his record at 1-1 as he scattered six hits and struck out six batters in his six innings of work. Weninger (3-for-3), Elliott (2-for-3, two RBI), Golebiewski (2-for-4), and Kucharski (2-for-4, one RBI) paced the Leopard offense.

Freshman Liam Cunningham (Northbridge, Mass.) suffered the loss (1-1) as he allowed six runs (four earned) on nine hits and struck out four in five innings. Shell had two hits for Anna Maria.

Wentworth (4-4) is at Mass. Maritime on Wednesday.
