Obin, Elliott Power Baseball to Third Straight Win

MILTON, Mass. – Senior Andrew Elliott (Rockland, Mass.) went 3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI while junior Ryan Obin (Plymouth, Mass.) went the distance for his second win of the season as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team picked up its third straight win with a 7-2 triumph over Curry in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Friday afternoon.

With the win the Leopards improve to 7-17 overall and 2-5 in CCC play while the Colonels fall to 9-5-1 (1-5-1).

Wentworth wasted little time getting on the board as senior Jake Smith (Orange, Conn.) hit a sacrifice fly with one out in the first inning, which plated sophomore Aidan French (Chicago, Ill.). French led off with a single and went to second on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt before moving to third on an Elliott single. The second inning saw the Black & Gold take a 2-0 lead on freshman Matt Bishop's (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) second home run of the season, which led off the inning.

Elliott's first home run of the game came with one out in the third. French led off with a walk and was erased on a force out which saw freshman Nolan McManus (Milton, Mass.) reach. McManus scored on the Elliott round-tripper. An inning later, Elliott put Wentworth ahead 7-0, hitting his second home run of the game and fourth of the season. Freshman Nate Ladeira (Fall River, Mass.) and junior Dan Mitchell (Avon, Mass.) led off with a single and a walk, respectively. Both moved up 90 feet on a French sacrifice bunt before Elliott brought them home.

Obin did not allow a hit until two outs in the fifth inning and got out of first and second jams in both the second and fourth innings. Freshman Julian Jaume (Brooklyn, N.Y.) got Curry's first hit with a single in the fifth and went to second on a wild pitch. He was stranded the when a groundout ended the inning.

The Colonels ended the shutout bid in the seventh inning when senior Spencer Cookson (Sheffield, Mass.) singled in classmate Tyler Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) Two innings later, Jenkins drew a two-out walk, went to second on a wild pitch, and stole third before junior Adam Duarte (East Providence, R.I.) singled him home.

Obin improves to 2-4 on the season, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out five. For Elliott, it was his second multiple-homer game of the season and he reached base a total of four times.

Junior James Mello (Fall River, Mass.) took the loss (0-4), allowing four runs on five hits and striking out four in three innings.
