Baseball Picks up Split Against Gordon

WEYMOUTH, Mass. – Senior Ross Golebiewski (Old Lyme, Conn.) and junior Dan Mitchell each recorded three hits on the day while senior Leo Coelho (Marlborough, Mass.) picked up his third win of the season with a complete-game effort in the second game as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team split with Gordon. The Fighting Scots rallied to take game one, 4-3, while the Leopards earned the split with a 3-1 win in the nightcap.

GAME ONE:  Gordon 4, Wentworth 3
Gordon took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as senior Chris Leavitt (East Bridgewater, Mass.) led off with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, and stole third. A junior Matt Paulsen (Latham, N.Y.) single with two outs brought him home. The home half of the inning saw Wentworth take a 2-1 lead. Freshman Matt Bishop (Ballson Lake, N.Y.) hit a one-out single and went to second on a senior Jake Smith (Orange, Conn.) single. With two outs, Golebiewski singled in Bishop and Smith advanced to third and scored on an errant throw.

The Leopards increased their lead to 3-1 in the home half of the fourth inning. Senior Andrew Elliott (Rockland, Mass.) led off with a single and went to second on a groundout by Golebiewski. Mitchell picked up an RBI when he doubled home Elliott with one out.

Junior Ryan Obin (Plymouth, Mass.) struck out the first two batters of the fifth inning – both looking – before Leavitt kept Gordon alive with a single. After stealing second, he scored on a single from senior Daniel Quint (Wells, Maine). Quint went to third on a junior John Largerfeldt (Stratford, Conn.) single where he took second on the throw. Paulsen gave the visitors the lead when he reached on an error which scored both baserunners.

Senior Derek Hudson (Hudson, N.H.) set down the final 11 Leopards, including putting the side down in order in the fifth, sixth, and seven innings.

Hudson improved to 3-3 on the year, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out four. Both Leavitt and Quint had two hits apiece for the Fighting Scots.

Obin took the loss (3-5), allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits and striking out seven in seven innings. Five different players had hits, including Golebiewski and Mitchell who each drove in a run.

GAME TWO:  Wentworth 3, Gordon 1
Both teams had chances to score in the first two innings, however, left a runner on third in each of those innings. Gordon also stranded a runner on third in the top of the third after a two-out triple from Quint, however, Coelho got a groundout to end the threat.

Wentworth took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning as sophomore Aidan French (Chicago, Ill.) hit a one-out single and stole second. After a strikeout, Elliott singled to score French. Smith followed with a double, however, Elliott was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. An inning later the hosts took a 3-0 lead as Mitchell hit a one-out triple and junior Jack Ruprecht (Kingston, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice. Freshman Nate Ladeira (Fall River, Mass.) scored Mitchell with a sacrifice bunt which moved Ruprecht to second. After freshman Nolan McManus (Milton, Mass.) walked, French singled in Ruprecht and moved McManus to third. French stole second placing two runners in scoring position, however, a fly out ended the inning.

Gordon got on the board in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Quint was hit by a pitch and with two outs, stole second. Paulsen delivered a single to score Quint before Coelho got a fly out to hold the Fighting Scots to just one run. With two outs in the seventh, Gordon brought the tying run to the plate, however, a fly out gave the Black & Gold the win.

Coelho improved to 3-2 on the season, allowing one run on five hits and striking out four. French, Golebiewski, and Mitchell had two hits apiece and combined for six of Wentworth's nine hits.

Sophomore Mark Galadeta (Chappaqua, N.Y.) took the loss (0-5), allowing one run on four hits and striking out four in three innings. Freshman Daniel Ensign (Barrington, Ill.) allowed two runs on five hits over the final three innings. Quint had two of Gordon's five hits.
