Thornton Lands Spot on D3Baseball.com Team of the Week

BOSTON, Mass. – A record-setting performance from Hunter Thornton (Old Lyme, Conn.) has landed the sophomore pitcher on the D3Baseball.com Team of the Week. Thornton earns the honor for games played from March 9-16.

Thornton tied a program single-game record when he struck out 15 batters in an 8-7, nine-inning win over Lesley on March 11. In that game he recorded three strikeouts in each of the first three innings, including starting the game by recording three consecutive strikeouts. In six innings of work, he allowed one run on four hits while walking three in addition to his record-setting performance. He threw 109 pitches with 70 of them going for strikes.

The 15 strikeouts in a game ties the record set by Bryan Hermanny in a seven-inning win over Anna Maria on April 15, 2000 and was matched by Chris Sandini in a nine-inning quarterfinal round win over Husson in the ECAC Tournament on May 12, 2010.

Thornton becomes the fourth Wentworth baseball student-athlete to earn a spot on the D3Baseball.com Team of the Week, joining Alex Wong (March 14, 2012), Jake Mailman (March 19, 2013), and Jon Spitz (March 19, 2014).

Wentworth finished the abbreviated 2020 campaign with a 6-4 record, which included a 6-2 record on its annual spring break tip to Central Florida.
