BOSTON, Mass. – Wentworth Institute of Technology Head Men's Basketball Coach Tom Devitt has announced that he has left the Institute after 11 seasons as the head coach and 14 years on the Leopard staff.
"It has been an immense pleasure coaching such gifted student-athletes over our successful time here at Wentworth," said Devitt. "The diverse personalities and achievements of these hard-working students have given me some of the best memories of my professional career. I will always value my relationships with these talented young people."
Devitt joined the Leopards in 1999 as an assistant coach and served as the interim head coach during the 2000-2001 season, leading Wentworth to an 11-14 record and a berth in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament.
After resuming assistant coach duties from 2001-2003, he was named the third men's basketball coach in the program's NCAA (1984-present) history in September of 2003. During his tenure he posted a program-best 139 wins, which included 66 wins over the last four seasons. Devitt guided his team to appearances in the last eight CCC Tournaments, winning the title in 2007 and advancing to the finals in 2011. Additionally, the Leopards earned ECAC Tournament berths in each of the last four seasons. This past season Wentworth finished 16-12.
The CCC Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2010, Devitt coached a pair of players who earned both league rookie of the year and player of the year honors during their careers. Sherrad Prezzie-Blue '08 was the CCC Rookie of the Year in 2005 and player of the year in 2007, while Todd Doyle '09 earned league rookie of the year honors in 2006 and CCC Player of the Year honors in 2009. Both players have also played professionally in Europe.
"I'd like to thank Tom for his commitment to the men's basketball program over the last 14 seasons," said Director of Athletics Angel Ayres. "We all wish him well with his future endeavors."
Wentworth will begin a national search for Devitt's replacement.
