SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Student-athletes from nine different institutions in the Commonwealth Coast Conference were represented on the 2013-14 All-CCC Men's Basketball Team. In addition to the all-conference team, four major individual award winners and the team sportsmanship award winner were selected.
Nichols College senior Ryan Sheehan was selected as the CCC Player of the Year, as well as the CCC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Gordon College junior Hans Miersma was honored for the second-straight year as the CCC Defensive Player of the Year, while Roger Williams University freshman Chris Bardwell was named CCC Rookie of the Year. Nichols' Jeff Lindgren was tabbed CCC Coach of the Year and Western New England University received the Team Sportsmanship Award.
Voting for the All-CCC team and each of the major awards was conducted among CCC men's basketball coaches.
Joining Miersma and Sheehan on the first team were Barrett Hanlon (Salve Regina University), Jaylen Owens (Eastern Nazarene College), Lambros Papalambros (Curry College), and Dennis Rinaldi (Western New England).
Second team honorees included Jeff Bielefeld (Salve Regina), Alex Carnes (Gordon), John Henault (Endicott College), Eric Lynch (Eastern Nazarene), and Ryan Palumbo (Roger Williams).
Joining Bardwell on the third team were Marlon Bennett (Nichols), Jherson Colon (Wentworth Institute of Technology), Patrick Dinneen (Salve Regina), Sam Horning (Nichols), Lachlan Magee (Endicott), Derek Mayo (Wentworth), and Park Thomas (Gordon).
For the third straight season Mayo (Casco, Maine) is honored by the conference as he earned honorable mention honors as a sophomore and first team honors a season ago. This season he is averaging 10.4 points5.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. Mayo recorded a career-high 28 points in a 66-61 loss to Vassar on December 30, and grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds in a 64-58 loss at Curry on January 25. In that game he also became the 14th member of the Wentworth men's basketball program to eclipse the 1,000-point mark for their career.
Mayo has started all every game the team has played over the course of his career (110), averaging 9.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. He ranks first all-time in program steals in steals, third in assists, seventh in scoring (1,092 points), and ninth in rebounding (536).
Colon (Boston, Mass.) has had an impressive start to his career as he leads the team in scoring with a 13.6 points per game average. Starting 14 of the 22 games in which he has played, he is also averaging 3.2 rebounds per game and 2.4 assists per game. A three-time CCC Rookie of the Week, Colon scored a season-high 23 points in a 71-67 loss to Eastern Nazarene on January 9.
Under first-year head coach Arlen Galloway, the Leopards finished the regular season with an 11-14 record and were 8-10 in the CCC. As the number seven seed, Wentworth travels to second-seeded Eastern Nazarene tonight for a CCC quarterfinal.
