Fast Start Lifts Men's Basketball to Win Over Emmanuel

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Jason Ganley (Northbridge, Mass.) scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help pace the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team to an 84-54 victory over Emmanuel on the second day of the 2016 Coaches vs Cancer Greater Boston Shootout.

With the win the Leopards improve to 1-1 on the season while the Saints fall to 0-2.

Wentworth scored the game's first 14 points and never looked back. Junior Jovanny Lamisere (Waltham, Mass.) had six of the Leopards first 14 points. Emmanuel senior Matt Raine (Miami, Fla.) put the Saints on the board with a basket with 14:09 left.

The Leopards used a 13-5 run – capped off by a Ganley transition layup – and took a 27-7 lead with 9:18 remaining. Wentworth's lead swelled to 26 with 3:07 left in the frame on a freshman Stephen Azums (Hyde Park, Mass.) free throw and the Black & Gold held a 43-17 lead at the break.

Wentworth shot 51.9 percent from the floor in the opening half and held Emmanuel to 17.6 percent.

Emmanuel opened the second half by scoring the seven points with four coming from junior Colin Cordero (Bolton, Conn.). However, the Leopards used a 9-2 run to take a 52-26 lead after a three pointer from junior Sam Knollmeyer (Hampton, N.H.).

Wentworth maintained a large lead throughout the remainder of the half and had its largest lead of the game at 33 late in the contest.

Freshman Matt Vartanian (Salem, N.H.) was 5-for-5 from the floor and finished with 11 points and three rebounds. Lamisere had eight points and five rebounds, junior Cesar Fulcar (Watertown, Mass.) finished with seven points, four rebounds, and four assists, and Knollmeyer had six points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Both Azums and sophomore Zach Bergeon (Litchfield, N.H.) finished with eight points.

Cordero led the Saints with 19 points to go along with four rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Joe Tamburro (South Windsor, Conn.) added 12 points. Emmanuel was held to 28.1 percent shooting from the floor.

Wentworth had a 53-36 rebounding advantage and scored 19 points off 11 turnovers. The Leopards shot 46.8 percent from the floor for the game.

Both Ganley and Cordero were named to the all-tournament team.
