Men's Basketball Pulls Away from SUNY-Canton

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Freshman Tommy Dooling (Mansfield, Mass.) paced a trio of student-athletes in double figures with 12 points as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 2011-2012 season with a 61-52 win over SUNY-Canton (1-2) at the 2019 Middlebury College Tip-Off Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • SUNY-Canton took its largest lead of the game (7-3) with 16:47 left in the opening half on a senior Kahden Bennett (Bronx, N.Y.) three pointer. Wentworth responded by using an 11-0 run over the next 7:04, taking a 14-7 lead on a freshman Jack Schaake (Hampton, N.H.) basket.
  • The Roos trimmed the lead to one on two occasions, including when junior Danny Santana (Clifton, N.J.) hit a three with 5:24 left. That basket was part of a 7-2 run when eventually saw SUNY Canton take a 25-24 lead on a sophomore Quran Dubois (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) layup with 3:46 left. Wentworth countered with five straight points; a three from Dooling and a layup from Schaake to give the Black & Gold a 29-25 lead at the half.
  • Four straight points from junior Joseph Werner (Valatie, N.Y.) to open the second half evened the score at 29-all before five of six free throws – two apiece from junior Trey Carrier (Wilton, N.H.) and Dooling and one from senior Stephen Azums (Roslindale, Mass.) – gave Wentworth a 34-29 lead with 17:27 left in the second half.
  • The Leopards pushed their lead to eight (41-33) after junior Tyler Lennon (Atkinson, N.H.) hit a three and junior Kyle Henseler (Coventry, R.I.) followed with a pair of free throws. However, SUNY-Canton would cut the lead to two (43-41) when sophomore Brandon Averitt (Monrovia, Calif.) made a layup with just over 10 minutes left.
  • A 9-0 run – capped off by a basket from Schaake – extended the Leopard lead to nine (50-41) with 5:57 remaining. Werner hit two free throws before Dooling countered with two free throws of his own on the next possession.
  • With 2:07 remaining, Dubois hit one of two free throws to cut the lead to 52-49, however, Wentworth closed out the game on a 9-3 run for the nine-point win.
  • Azums had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds while Carrier added 11 points. Schaake finished with six points and nine rebounds.
  • Werner led all scorers with 16 points.
  • Wentworth held the Roos to 30.2 percent shooting and scored 17 points off 24 SUNY-Canton turnovers.
