Suffolk Tops Men's Basketball
Jack Connell scores 20 points to move into third place on the program's all-time scoring list, however, the Rams take the crosstown victory
BOSTON, Mass. – Suffolk University's Keenan Robertson scored a game-high 36 points on 13-of-17 shooting, leading three student-athletes in double figures, as the Suffolk University men's basketball team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 95-69, in Conference of New England action on Saturday afternoon.
Jack Connell led the Leopards with 20 points and, in the process, moved into third place on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,528 career points.
The win lifts the Rams to 16-7 overall and 12-4 in conference play, while Wentworth sees its three-game win streak halted, falling to 9-14 (8-8).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Nathan Brinkman opened the game with a three pointer and Tyler Stewart hit a pair of free throws just over a minute later, giving the Black & Gold a 5-2 lead. A 13-2 Suffolk run put the hosts on top, 15-7, after Nick Verdile made a three with 16:09 left in the half.
- Connell ended the run with a three before Suffolk pushed its lead to as many as 12 after a Robertson layup with 12:41 left. Connell answered with seven straight points, pulling Wentworth within five, however, the hosts brought their lead back to double digits after Cole Levangie hit a three with 9:06 left.
- Suffolk upped its lead to 19 (43-24) on a pair of Devin Dzikas free throws with 4:15 left before Wentworth used a 9-2 run to trim the lead to 12 (45-33) after Niko Rosich made one of two free throws. Rosich had all nine points during the run. The hosts scored the final four points of the half to lead, 49-33.
- The Rams upped their lead to 21 (60-39) on a Verdile three at the 17:40 mark and, after Aiden Flaherty made a layup to make it 64-45 with 15:07, Suffolk pulled away with a 10-3 run, extending its lead to 26 (74-48) with 10:47 left.
- Danny Yardemian scored 19, while Dzikas chipped in with 10.
- In addition to Connell's 20 points, Rosich came off the bench to score a career-high 18, while Stewart added 10.
ALL-TIME SERIES:
- Today was the 24th all-time meeting between the two teams. Wentworth has won three of the last five meetings.
