SALEM, Mass. — Chad Goodwin (Whitinsville, Mass.) scored 48 seconds into overtime and goalie Ryan Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev.) made 29 saves as Salem State (1-0) recorded a 2-1 win over the Wentworth Institute of Technology (1-2) in the Vikings' home opener on Wednesday evening at Rockett Arena.

The Leopards' Sean McLaughlin (North Billerica, Mass.) tapped in a pass from Dan Szerlip (Newton, Mass.) to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at 14:05 of the first period. Salem State had a few close range opportunities, but were unable to put the puck past goaltender Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.).

Halfway through the second period, Kristofer Faric (Whitby, Ont.) had a clear shot on net, but could not connect for the equalizer, and later, Sutliffe made a pad save and then a glove save on a Wentworth rebound attempt to keep the game 1-0 going into the third.

At the 12:15 mark of the third period, the Vikings finally got on the board when Andrew Bettencourt (Riverside, R.I.) won the battle in front of the net on a loose puck on assists from Eric Defelice (Chalfont, Pa.) and Mark McDonald (Norwell, Mass.).

In overtime, Wentworth got caught out of position and could not stop Salem State's rush as Goodwin made a brilliant move to score the game-winner.

Miller stopped 31 targets, but slipped to 0-2 on the year. The Vikings had 32 shots on goal while Wentworth took 30.

Salem State plays again on Tuesday at Plymouth State at 6:00 p.m., in MASCAC play. Wentworth takes the ice Saturday at Johnson & Wales at 7:10 p.m. to open ECACECAC Northeast play.
