Hockey Closes Out 2013 With Loss at UMass Boston

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Frankie DeAugustine (Pittsburgh, Pa.) netted four goals and classmate Jeremy Finger (Orlando, Fla.) had three assists to help pace the University of Massachusetts Boston ice hockey team to a 9-2 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in the final game of the 2013 calendar year for both squads.

The Beacons scored a pair of goals in the first and never looked back as DeAugustine scored at 8:52 and with 38 ticks left in the period. The hosts would break the game open in a four-goal second period as senior Mike Kuhn (Holbrook, Mass.) scored at 4:31 and sophomore Kit Sitterley (Mooresville, N.C.) made it 4-0 at 9:21. Sophomore Mike Miller (Wrentham, Mass.) gave UMass Boston a 5-0 lead with a goal at 10:53 before DeAugustine recorded a hat trick with seven seconds left in the period.

UMass Boston scored two goals in a span 44 seconds to open the third period, taking an 8-0 lead after sophomore Connor McStravick (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored at 2:43 and senior Mark Grinhaus (Scarsdale, N.Y.) found the back of the net at 3:27, respectively.

The Leopards broke the shutout bid at the 11:31 mark on a goal from senior Lawton McCracken (Colbourne, Ont.) and sophomore Mike Cox (Marlborough, Mass.) made it 8-2 at 15:07. DeAugustine closed out the scoring with his fourth marker of the game, coming with 1:14 remaining.

Sophomore Zach Andrews (Coral Springs, Fla.) made 12 saves over the first two periods to improve to 7-1-2. Junior Matt Meisenbacher (Basking Ridge, N.J.) made a dozen saves in the third period for the Beacons. Sophomore Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.) made 18 saves in 30:53, while junior Alex Peck (Kirkland, Que.) made 18 saves over the final 29:07 for the Leopards. The Beacons held a 45-24 shot advantage.

With the win, UMass Boston improves to 7-1-2 and is idle until the Beacons host the 49th Annual Codfish Bowl Tournament the weekend of January 4-5. The Beacons will play Suffolk in the first round. Wentworth falls to 4-7-1 and is idle until facing Colby in the opening round of the Babson/Salem State Tournament on January 2 in Salem, Mass.
