Hockey Picks up Third Straight Win

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – Freshmen Jake Flynn (Lino Lakes, Minn.) and Matthew Heise (Kirkland, Que.) each scored first period goals and junior Alex Peck (Kirkland, Que.) made 18 saves to record his second shutout of the season as the Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team won its third straight game with a 2-0 win over Salve Regina in an ECAC Northeast contest.

With the win the Leopards move into a three-way tie for second place in league play, improving to 5-3 and 7-10-2 overall. The Seahawks drop to 7-12 overall and sit tied with both Wentworth and Johnson & Wales, a point behind first-place Nichols.

Flynn notched his first collegiate goal after collecting the puck in front of the net and pushing it under Salve Regina's goalie freshman Alexander Devine's (Hampton, N.H.) pads to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead just 3:08 into action. Senior Andrew Yarber (Livonia, Mich.) and sophomore Adam Frank (Clarkston, Mich.) each had a hand in getting Flynn the puck in front of the net.

With 2:23 left in the opening frame, Heise found an open top right corner and gave the Black & Gold some insurance, off assists from classmates Connor Crowe (Galloway, N.J.) and Joe Mottiqua (Cecil, Pa.).

The second and third periods saw a combined 13 penalties, however neither team was able to capitalize on a man advantage.

With two minutes left Devine was pulled for an extra attacker, but the Seahawks were unable to get a shot past Peck, who picked up his sixth win of the season.

Devine made 18 stops as well in the loss as Wentworth held a 20-18 edge in shots on goal. Salve Regina was 0-for-6 on the power play while Wentworth was 0-for-3.

Wentworth returns to action when the Leopards host Johnson & Wales on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. while the Seahawks will travel to Boston on Tuesday to face Suffolk at 8:40 p.m.
