Hockey Opens Season With 3-1 Win

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Three different players scored goals for the Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team as the Leopards opened the 2014-15 campaign with a 3-1 win over Worcester State in the opening round of the IC Federal Credit Union Shootout.

The win was the first collegiate head coaching victory for Leopard head coach Jay Pecora and Wentworth won its season opener for the first time since the 2009-10 campaign.

Wentworth got on the board midway through the first period as freshman Chris Sattler (East Longmeadow, Mass.) netted his first collegiate goal off assists from classmate Nick Newman (Saugus, Calif.) and senior Jordan Bourgonje (Spruce Grove, Alta.). That would be the lone goal of the opening frame as the Leopards held an 8-4 shot advantage.

The second period looked as though it would remain a one-goal game until senior Mike Domsodi (Kirkland, Que.) scored with 26 ticks left off passes from sophomore Kyle Lebrun (Bridgewater, Mass.) and senior Ben Iwanowski (Dorval, Que.).

With just under five minutes left in the game, senior Kevin Crowe (Galloway, N.J.) put the Leopards ahead as he scored from sophomore Matthew Heise (Kirkland, Que.) and freshman Jake McDonough (Marshfield, Mass.).

The Lancers got on the board with 2:45 remaining when sophomore Michael Dery (Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored from freshman Sean Haltam (Medina, Calif.).

Senior Alex Peck (Kirkland, Que.) made 13 saves for the Leopards while junior Salvatore Tecci (Franklin, Mass.) made 30 saves for Worcester State. Wentworth held a 33-14 shot advantage.

Both teams play tomorrow as Worcester State faces off against Becker at 1:00 and Wentworth plays Fitchburg State at 4:00.
