BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Teagan Waugh (Nanaimo, B.C.) scored the final three goals of the contest to record a hat trick as the Manhattanville College men's hockey team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 4-1, in non-conference action Sunday evening at Walter Brown Arena.

With the win the Valiants snap a three-game winless streak (0-1-2) and improve to 6-5-3 while the Leopards see their three-game unbeaten streak snapped and fall to 6-6-2.

After starting the first 14 minutes scoreless, the Leopards appeared to put the first goal on the board thanks to junior Jake Diamond (Lakewood, Colo.), but it was immediately called off. Diamond carried the puck behind the Manhattanville net, flung a shot toward the bottom right side of the goal, and beat goaltender Brian Fleming (St. John, N.B.). The goal was disallowed because the net had come off its bearings during the play. Neither side would score in the first.

The Valiants struck first, as freshman Stephen Gaul (Downers Grove, Ill.) put his team on top 1-0 with an even strength goal four and a half minutes into the second. Manhattanville carried the puck from its own defensive zone, rushed up ice, and fed Gaul the puck in the left circle, who fired a wrister five-hole. Five minutes later, freshman Erik Andersson (Madison, N.J.) put the Leopards on the board to tie the score at one. Following a scrum behind the net, Andersson got the puck from classmate Nick Newman (Saugus, Calif.) in front of the goalie crease and threw the puck into the net to tie the contest. It didn't take much longer for the Valiants to recapture the lead, as Waugh scored a one-timer four minutes after Wentworth's goal. With Manhattanville in the offensive zone, junior Matt Coleman (Brentwood, N.Y.) passed the puck between two defensemen in the right circle and found a wide open Waugh in the left circle, who sent the puck to the back of the net.

Manhattanville extended the lead to two thanks once again to Waugh. With the teams playing 4-on-4, the Valiants won the offensive zone face-off in the left circle. Coleman picked up the puck left of the net and once again found an open Waugh to finish the play and put Manhattanville up 3-1. Wentworth looked poised to score another goal at the end of the game, as the Black and Gold had a power-play opportunity with the goalie pulled. However Manhattanville ended any chance of a comeback with an empty net goal from Waugh to finish off his hat trick and the game.

Junior Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.) had 26 saves on the night, while Fleming stopped 25 on the other end. The Valiants had a 30-26 shot advantage for the game.

Wentworth picks up play on Wednesday night, as they host nationally ranked UMass Boston in a non-conference game at 7:30 p.m. Manhattanville plays the second game of a five-game road trip on Friday night, as the Valiants travel to Williams College for an afternoon contest.
