Hockey Gets Back on Winning Track

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Jake McDonough (Marshfield, Mass.) scored the first two goals of his career as the Wentworth Institute of Technology hockey team defeated Assumption 4-2 in non-conference action Sunday evening at Walter Brown Arena.

With the win the Leopards snap a two-game losing streak and a three-game winless streak and improve to 7-7-2 on the season while the Greyhounds slip to 7-10-0 on the season.

Assumption lit the lamp first at the 6:13 mark of the opening frame, with sophomore Nick Fennuccio (Keene, N.H.) scoring his first goal of the season. Senior defenseman Joe Arcieri (Newmarket, N.H.) chipped the puck out of his own zone towards the neutral zone. Sophomore Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J.) grabbed the puck, rushed towards net, and fired a shot. Fennuccio shot off the rebound and scored for the Greyhounds.

The Leopards tied the contest a little over 11 minutes later when sophomore Jake Flynn (Lino Lakes, Mich.) fired a shot, which was initially saved by junior Chris Hemhauser (Old Saybrook, Conn.). Freshman Alex Paolo (Hope, R.I.) deflected the rebound to McDonough who netted his first collegiate marker.

At the 12:43 mark of the second, Assumption jumped ahead once again with another goal off of a rebound. Arcieri put a shot on goal and senior Trevor Plante (Blackstone, Mass.) finished the play with the power-play goal. Four minutes later, Wentworth once again tied the contest with a goal as McDonough converted a shot from the point, assisted by freshman Erik Andersson (Madison, N.J.) and junior Adam Frank (Clarkston, Mich.) to make it 2-2.

In the final seconds of the period, Wentworth applied pressure and scored just before the buzzer sounded. Freshman Chris Sattler (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored in front of the net after the puck was fired in by senior Mike Domsodi (Kirkland, Que.) to make it 3-2 going into second intermission. Senior Sean McLaughlin (North Billerica, Mass.) also picked up a helper on Sattler's team-leading seventh tally of the season.

The Leopards scored less than a minute into the third, with junior Mike Cox (Marlborough, Mass.) finishing an unassisted goal to put Wentworth up 4-2 and ultimately seal the deal. Cox picked up a turnover in the Greyhound end and beat Hemhauser for his first of the season.

Hemhauser was pulled for an extra attacker over the final 1:07, however both of Assumption's shots were saved by junior Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.) to keep it a two-goal contest.

Miller finished with 20 saves, including 10 in the final period. Hemhauser made 29 stops as the Leopards held a 33-22 shot advantage for the contest.

Wentworth resumes ECAC Northeast play on Friday night at 6:50 p.m. at Becker while Assumption travels to St. Michael's on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
