Hockey Doubles Up Becker

MARLBORO, Mass. – Six different players tallied goals while senior Michael Heffner (Lloydminster, Sask.) and freshman Ryan Sullivan (Whately, Mass.) each recorded a pair of assists as the Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team doubled up Becker, 6-3, in an ECAC Northeast contest played at the New England Sports Center.

Winners of two straight the Leopards improve to 8-7-2 overall and 3-2-1 in league play while the Hawks dropped their third straight to sit at 4-13-0 (0-6-0).

The Leopards notched the only goal of the opening stanza when Heffner carried the puck into the zone and fed sophomore Joe Mottiqua (Cecil, Pa.), whose shot was initially saved by Becker junior Greg Hussey (Medford, Mass.). However, senior Mike Domsodi (Kirkland, Que.) put home the rebound at 6:02.

An offensive-oriented second period saw the two teams combine to score six goals. The Hawks evened the score at 1-all at 3:57 when sophomore Connor Merrick (Manchester, N.H.) scored off feeds from classmates Connor Allison (Hillsboro, Ore.) and Nick McKee (Bakersfield, Calif.). Two and a half minutes later the Leopards regained the lead when freshman Elliot Tisdale (Valencia, Pa.) scored his first collegiate marker from Heffner.

Senior Fred Hein (North Reading, Mass.) evened the score at 2-all with an unassisted tally at 11:22, however, Wentworth took the lead for good 1:32 later when junior Adam Frank (Clarkston, Mich.) scored from freshman Erik Andersson (Madison, N.J.) and Sullivan and took a 4-2 lead when Mottiqua scored from Sullivan and Domsodi. Becker closed the gap to 4-3 with just three seconds left in the period as freshman Macgregor Howey (Grosse Ile, Mich.) scored from freshman Corey Sherman (Hilton, N.Y.) and Hein.

Wentworth scored both goals of the third period with both markers coming less than three minutes apart. Andersson scored from seniors Sean McLaughlin (North Billerica, Mass.) and Ben Iwanowski (Dorval, Que.) at 5:39 and senior Kevin Crowe (Galloway, N.J.) scored from junior Mike Cox (Marlborough, Mass.) and Tisdale.

Junior Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.) made 29 saves in the win while Hussey made 32 saves. The Leopards held a 38-32 shot advantage for the contest.

Wentworth hosts Suffolk on Wednesday night while Becker is at Curry on Tuesday evening.
