Hockey Doubled up by Curry in ECAC Northeast Tournament

MILTON, Mass. – Eight different players scored goals while sophomore James Murphy (Malden, Mass.) recorded four assists as the Curry College ice hockey team advanced to the semifinals of the 2015 ECAC Northeast Tournament with an 8-4 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology.

With the win the Colonels improve to 15-9-2 and will play at top-seeded Nichols in one semifinal on Wednesday night while the Leopards' season ends at 11-12-3.

Curry scored the game's first four goals, all coming in a span of 9:09. Junior Shane Harrington (Mansfield, Mass.) got things started with a power-play marker from Murphy and sophomore Jake Hensinger (Winnipeg, Man.) just 1:06 into the contest. Murphy and senior Chris Mason (Monrovia, Calif.) would set up sophomore Dan McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.) for a shorthanded tally at 6:14 and Hensinger and freshman Adam DiBrina (Sudbury, Ont.) set up senior Braeden Ruud (Vermilion, Alta.) 1:33 later. Harrington and Murphy would set up Mason on the power play at 10:15 to make it a 4-0 contest.

Wentworth got on the board with 3:09 left in the frame when freshman Erik Andersson (Madison, N.J.) scored on the power play from seniors Mike Domsodi (Kirkland, Que.) and Kevin Crowe (Galloway, N.J.). The Leopards held a 15-10 shot advantage after the first period of play.

The Colonels scored the only two goals of the second period as senior Jordan Reed (Ajax, Ont.) provided what would hold up as the game winner, scoring a power-play goal form McGinnis and Murphy at 5:22. Nearly five minutes later Curry would take a 6-1 lead when freshman Adam Valadao (Ajax, Ont.) would score from sophomores Tyler Vankleef (Dundas, Ont.) and Michael Vallescuro (Woodbridge, Ont.).

Wentworth made it interesting in the third period, scoring three straight to make it a 6-4 game. Andersson netted a power-play goal from senior Michael Heffner (Lloydminster, Sask.) and freshman Jake McDonough (Marshfield, Mass.) at 5:44. Freshman Chris Sattler (Whately, Mass.) scored from junior Mike Cox (Marlboro, Mass.) at the 10:41 mark to make it 6-3 before freshman Brian Farkas (Shoreline, Wash.) fed junior Adam Frank (Clarkston, Mich.) at 14:21.

The Leopards pulled senior Jeff Giordani (Quincy, Mass.) for an extra attacker, however the Colonels tacked on two empty-net goals with freshman Phil Kess (Burlington, Ont.) and junior Ryan Gay (Nesconset, N.Y.) sealing the win.

Senior Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.) made 33 saves in the win. Junior Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.) made 33 saves in the win. Junior Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.) made a pair of saves in 10:15, senior Alex Peck (Kirkland, Que.) made 12 saves in 29:45 of action while Giordani made two saves in 19:18 of action. The Leopards had a 37-24 shot advantage.
