Hockey Opens Season With Shutout of Worcester State

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Sophomore Jake McDonough (Marshfield, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals, classmate Ryan Sullivan (Whately, Mass.) handed out three assists, and senior Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.) record his fourth career shutout as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's ice hockey team commenced its 2015-16 season with a 6-0 victory against Worcester State University at the ICFCU Shootout.

The Leopards tallied five times in a span of 7:04 in the opening frame and never looked back. McDonough got the only goal Wentworth would need off a feed from Sullivan at 8:38 and took a 2-0 lead 1:09 later when freshman Sean Brennan (Stony Point, N.Y.) lit the lamp for the first time in his collegiate career and he was set up by Sullivan and sophomore Chris Sattler (East Longmeadow, Mass.).

Senior Stephen McManus (Westwood, Mass.) gave the Leopards a 3-0 lead on a power play goal off assists from freshman Adam Lane (Sarnia, Ont.) and junior Jake Flynn (Lino Lakes, Minn.) at 13:22. Just 23 seconds later Wentworth took a 4-0 lead on McDonough's second of the game, which was assisted by sophomore Erik Andersson (Madison, N.J.) and freshman Jonny Spada (Glen Rock, N.J.).

Lane and Sullivan would set freshman Byron Carlisle (Orleans, Mass.) up for his first collegiate marker at 15:42 to round out the first period scoring.

After a scoreless middle stanza, Andersson gave Wentworth a 6-0 lead with 6:51 remaining in the contest.

Miller made 19 stops for Wentworth while Lancer senior Salvatore Tecci (Franklin, Mass.) finished with 32 saves. The Leopards had a 38-19 shot advantage, which included a 17-7 edge in the first period.

Both teams play in the second day of the tournament on Saturday. Worcester State faces off against Southern Maine at 1:00 while Wentworth plays host Fitchburg State at 4:00.
