Endicott's Fast Start Stops Hockey's Unbeaten Streak

BEVERLY, Mass. – Five different players scored goals and freshman Joseph Slovak (South Yarmouth, Mass.) had a pair of assists as the Endicott College ice hockey team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 5-3, in an ECAC Northeast contest played at Raymond Bourque Arena.

Winners of two straight the Gulls improve to 2-1-2 overall and 2-1-1 in league play while the Leopards see their three-game unbeaten streak come to an end, falling to 3-2-1 (2-1-1).

Endicott wasted little time getting on the board as the hosts scored a pair of goals in a span of 1:24 early in the contest. Freshman Lloyd Hayes (West Newbury, Mass.) scored off a feed from freshman Josh Bowes (Sturgeon County, Alta.). At 2:53, freshman Cam Beck (Lake Forest, Ill.) and freshman Joseph Kaszupski (Henderson, Nev.) set up Ross Olsson (Billerica, Mass.) to give the hosts a two-goal lead.

Wentworth sliced the deficit in half at the 6:28 mark when freshman Jonny Spada (Glen Rock, N.J.) scored from sophomore Ryan Sullivan (Whately, Mass.) and freshman Angus Johnston (Calgary, Alta.).

Twelve seconds later the Gulls again made it a two-goal game when freshman Parker Wood (Rochester Hills, Mich.) scored from Slovak and freshman Trey Olson (Omaha, Neb.) and Slovak and Wood would assist on freshman Alexander Bonito's (Buffalo, N.Y.) power-play goal at 10:12 to make it a 4-1 contest. Bowes scored from Olsson at 15:13 to make it 5-1.

Despite trailing 5-1 after the first period, the Leopards outshot the Gulls, 14-12. While the second period saw no scoring, Wentworth had an 18-7 shot advantage.

Wentworth scored both of the goals in the third period and had a 22-7 shot advantage. At 1:13, sophomore Chris Sattler (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored from senior Stephen McManus (Westwood, Mass.), and, 1:50 later, Spada and Johnston set up senior Mike Cox (Marlborough, Mass.).

Endicott freshman Kevin Aldridge (Beverly Hills, Mich.) made 51 saves in the win while senior Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.) made three saves on seven shots in 10:12 before freshman Matt Jenkins (Mount Pearl, N.L.) made 19 saves over 48:03.

The game featured the first time Endicott head coach R.J. Tolan faced his former team. Tolan coached the Leopards from 2006-2014 before leaving to start the Gulls' program.
