WORCESTER, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to take a 3-2 lead early in the third period, however Assumption junior Kevin Murphy (North Conway, N.H.) netted the game-tying goal with 6:49 remaining in regulation as the Leopards and the Greyhounds skated to a 3-all tie Sunday afternoon at Buffone Arena.
Wentworth snaps a 10-game losing streak and stands at 3-11-2 while Assumption is 7-7-3.
The Leopards took a 1-0 lead at 12:18 of the opening frame when freshman Ben Mello (Pawtucket, R.I.) set up classmate Adam Lane (Sarnia, Ont.). Nearly three and a half minutes later the Greyhounds evened the score when senior Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Mass.) and sophomore Matt Cowles (Farmington, Conn.) set up junior Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J.). Assumption, which had a 20-13 shot advantage after 20 minutes of play, took a 2-1 lead with Gomez set up sophomore Brian Farrell (Island Park, N.Y.) with 57 seconds left in the period.
Wentworth outshot Assumption 29-11 in the second period and scored the frame's only goal when freshmen Ethan Weiss (Troy, Mich.) and Byron Carlisle (Orleans, Mass.) set up classmate Paul Filippone (Cranston, R.I.) for his first career marker, which came on the power play at 14:06.
Junior Jake Flynn (Lino Lakes, Minn.) gave the Leopards a 3-2 advantage at 4:42 of the third period on a power play goal, which was assisted by senior Stephen McManus (Westwood, Mass.) and sophomore Nick Newman (Saugus, Calif.). Wentworth, which has a 20-13 shot advantage, held the lead until sophomore Tommy Mahoney (Braintree, Mass.) set up Murphy.
In overtime the Leopards outshot the Greyhounds 9-4, however the game would end in a 3-3 tie.
Sophomore Ryan Hubbard (West Roxbury, Mass.) made a career-high 45 saves for the Black & Gold. Senior Chris Hemhauser (Marshfield, Mass.) made 68 stops as Wentworth outshot Assumption 71-48.
