Early Goals Help Salve Regina Fly Past Hockey

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Junior Evan Schultz (Durham, N.H.) scored a pair of goals and sophomore Evin Schmidbauer (San Diego, Calif.) had a goal and an assist as nine different skaters tallied at least one point to pace the Salve Regina University ice hockey team to an 8-1 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in ECAC Northeast play.

With the win the Seahawks improve to 10-6-1 overall and 5-2-1 in league play while the Leopards fall to 3-12-2 (2-5-1).

The hosts wasted little time getting on the board, scoring a pair of goals in 1:48 as seniors Liam Centrella (Andover, Mass.) and Marc Biggs (Plano, Texas) lit the lamp at 1:26 and 3:14, respectively. Schultz gave Salve Regina a 3-0 lead after one period when he scored at 6:19.

A pair of early, second period markers gave the Seahawks a 5-0 lead as freshman Nick Cyr (Mount Laurel, N.J.) and Schultz scored at 1:39 and 4:33, respectively. After being outshot 14-8 in the first period Wentworth held a 9-8 advantage in the second period.

Wentworth jumped on the board at 13:49 of the third period when freshman Paul Filippone (Cranston, R.I.) scored from classmate Byron Carlisle (Orleans, Mass.).

The Seahawks completed the scoring with a goal at 14:25 from sophomore Pat Thompson (Hellertown, Pa.), a tally from freshman Alex Spurlock (Middletown, R.I.) at 17:45, and a Schmidbauer goal with 45 seconds left.

Freshman Blake Wojtala (Trenton, Mich.) made 30 stops in the win. Sophomore Ryan Hubbard (Wes Roxbury, Mass.) allowed a pair of goals on three shots in 3:14 while senior Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.) made 18 saves over the final 56:46. Wentworth, which outshot the Seahawks 14-5 in the final period, finished the game with a 31-27 shot advantage.

Wentworth hosts Curry on Saturday. That same day Salve Regina hosts Suffolk.
