Hockey Skates Past Suffolk For Fourth Straight Victory

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Jake Flynn (Lino Lakes, Minn.) scored a goal and assisted on another to help the Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team pick up its fourth straight victory with a 3-1 win over Suffolk in ECAC Northeast action Saturday night.

With the win the Leopards improve to 7-13-2 overall and even their league mark at 6-6-1 while the Rams dropped their second straight to sit at 12-7-2 (7-4-2).

Flynn gave the Black & Gold a 1-0 lead just 30 seconds into the contest when he tallied his sixth of the season off a feed from freshman Adam Lane (Sarnia, Ont.). Suffolk evened the contest at a goal apiece at the 7:11 mark when sophomore Luke Miller (Lancaster, Calif.) converted passes from senior Zack Capozza (Spotsylvania, Pa.) and freshman Connor Henry (Trumbull, Conn.) for his fifth marker of the year.

With 6:31 left in the frame, Flynn assisted on what would be the game-winning marker as he and freshman Ethan Weiss (Troy, Mich.) set up sophomore Jake McDonough (Marshfield, Mass.) on the power play for his team-leading seventh marker of the season.

Neither team scored in the second period, however it wasn't without action as the two teams combined for 36 minutes in penalties, which included a pair of 10-minute misconducts.

Freshman Eric Eustace (Oakville, Ont.) tallied his first collegiate goal at the 9:04 mark as his power-play goal was set up by sophomore Nick Newman (Saugus, Calif.) and freshman Sean Brennan (Stony Point, N.Y.).

Senior Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.) made 37 saves, including 29 over the final two periods to pick up his seventh win of the season and 30th of his career. His 30 career wins move him into fourth on the program's all-time victory list. Senior Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, Mich.) made 22 saves for the Rams, who held a 38-25 shot advantage on the evening.

Wentworth is at Nichols next Saturday (February 13) while Suffolk is at Johnson & Wales on Thursday.
