EVERETT, Mass. – Senior Sean Nelson (Brighton, Mich.) scored a pair of goals and added two assists and junior Jarret Kup (Rosseau, Ont.) tallied two goals as the Curry College hockey team held on to defeat Wentworth Institute of Technology, 4-3, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Colonels improve to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in league play while the Leopards fall to 0-4 (0-2).
Wentworth jumped on the board first on a power-play goal from sophomore Angus Johnston (Calgary, Ata.), which was set up by freshman Dakoda Menslage (Orleans, Mass.) and Matthew Kennedy (Mount Pearl, N.L.). However, Curry would score the next four goals to take a 4-1 lead after one period of play.
At the 10:47 mark, Nelson scored his first of the game, a power-play goal, which was set up by junior Shane Tracy (Bow, N.H.) and junior Adam Valadao (Ajax, Ont.). A minute and 17 seconds later, Nelson struck again, this time set up by Tracy and junior Ryan Fitzgerald (Cary, N.C.).
On a delayed penalty call at the 19:06 mark, Kup gave the Colonels a 3-1 lead when he was set up by Nelson and senior Dan McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.). With just one second left in the period, Kup netted a power-play goal, which was assisted by Nelson and Valadao.
A defensively-played second period yielded few opportunities for both teams, however Wentworth scored the lone goal of the frame on a sophomore Ethan Weiss (Troy, Mich.) marker, which was assisted by Menslage.
Kennedy pulled the Leopards within a goal at 3:51 of the third with a power-play goal which was set up by Johnston and senior Jake Flynn (Lino Lakes, Minn.).
Wentworth pulled sophomore Griffin Cady (Falmouth, Maine) with a minute remaining for an extra attacker, however was unable to get the equalizer.
