Hockey Battles Back to Tie Stonehill

EVERETT, Mass. – Sophomore Sean Brennan's (Stony Point, N.Y.) goal with 5:12 remaining in the third period enabled the Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team to tie Stonehill, 4-4, Tuesday night at the Allied Veterans Memorial Rink.

The Leopards, who received a pair of goals and an assist from junior Jake McDonough (Marshfield, Mass.), stand at 2-10-1 after halting a two-game losing streak. The Skyhawks stand at 4-9-3 after the draw.

A fast-paced first period yielded few scoring chances for each squad and Stonehill had a 10-8 shot advantage after the first 20 minutes.

The Skyhawks would net the game's first goal at 6:21 of the second period when senior Evan Jacques (Norton, Mass.) scored from junior Austin Goldstein (Parkland, Fla.) and junior Connor Tedesco (Winchester, Mass.). The lead would not last long, however, as McDonough scored his first of the game off a pass from sophomore Adam Lane (Sarnia, Ont.) at 7:04. Wentworth took a 2-1 lead into the locker room when Lane notched his second assist of the game as he set up senior Jake Flynn (Lino Lakes, Minn.) for a shorthanded tally at 11:36. The Leopards had a 14-7 shot advantage in the second period.

Stonehill evened the score at 2-all when freshman Jack Hall (Shelburne, Vt.) set up classmate Connor Cassidy (Wilmington, Del.) just 1:16 into the third period.

On a delayed penalty call, the Leopards pulled junior Ryan Hubbard (West Roxbury, Mass.) and the extra attacker paid off as freshman CJ Grinnell (Burlington, Mass.) cleared the zone with a pass to classmate Connor Beaudet (Buffalo, N.Y.) Beaudet found McDonough who gave the Black & Gold a 3-2 lead.

A pair of goals in a 25-second span gave the Skyhawks a 4-3 lead. At 12:33, freshman Cameron Wright (West Dummerston, Vt.) scored from sophomore Christopher Page (Winthrop, Mass.) while at 12:59 freshman Ryan Meade (Tewksbury, Mass.) set up sophomore Brian Higgins (Milton, Mass.).

Brennan's game-tying goal, which came on the power play, was scored when McDonough won a faceoff in the right circle and fed the puck to Brennan, whose one-timer beat sophomore Billy Palmer.

Both teams had chances to win the game as regulation wound down, however neither could score.

In overtime, Wentworth had a 4-1 shot advantage but it was Stonehill with the best chance late in the session as Wright was fed a pass right in front, but Hubbard came up with the save.

Hubbard made 26 saves while Palmer stopped 38 shots. Wentworth had a 42-30 shot advantage.

The Leopards host Post University Friday night.
