Hockey Sees Unbeaten Streak Snapped With Loss to Nichols

EVERETT, Mass. – Three different players scored goals and senior Colin Brennan (Chester, N.J.) notched his second shutout of the season as the Nichols College hockey team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 3-0, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game Saturday afternoon.

With the win the Bison improve to 4-2-2 overall and 3-1-2 in CCC play while the Leopards see their three-game unbeaten streak come to an end, falling to 2-5-1 (2-3-1).

Nichols wasted little time getting on the board as the visitors took advantage of an early Wentworth penalty. Junior Ian Spencer (Hawthorne, N.J.) scored his second of the year from junior Matthew Menta (Lima, Pa.) and sophomore J.B. Baker (Columbia, Md.). Spencer's shot initially rang off the post, however bounced back over the line.

While both teams had chances, that was the lone goal of the opening frame and would be the only goal until the Bison broke the game open in the third period. At 3:31 of the period, sophomore Hogan Davidson (Duluth, Minn.) and junior T.J. Roche (Northport, N.Y.) set up junior Ben Campbell (Duluth, Minn.) on the power play to make it 2-0.

At the 17:39 mark, Nichols went on a power play and senior Ryan Hubbard (West Roxbury, Mass.) was pulled to even the surface with 2:02 left. The Bison broke up a play and started a 2-on-1, which was initially poked away by a Wentworth defender. However, senior Chris Deming (Madison, Ala.) came up with the puck and sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 19:19.

Brennan made 23 saves while Hubbard stopped 17 shots. The Leopards had a 23-20 shot advantage.

Both teams are in action on Saturday as Wentworth is at New England College and Nichols plays Amherst at the Binghamton Devils Tournament.
