Hockey Wraps up First Semester With Loss at Suffolk

BOSTON, Mass. – Five different players scored goals, including freshman Matt Bucher (Cromwell, Conn.) and junior Nick Mosher (Cumming, Ga.) who each also added an assist as the Suffolk University hockey team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 5-2, at the Emmons Horrigan O'Neil Memorial Rink Saturday night.

With the win the Rams improve to 6-6-1 overall and 3-6-1 in Commonwealth Coast Conference play while the Leopards fall to 4-7-3 (3-4-3) after seeing their four-game unbeaten streak come to a halt.

After a scoreless first period, Suffolk wasted little time getting on the board in the second period as freshman Jack Kelly (Arlington, Mass.) scored a power-play goal from Mosher. The Rams increased their lead to 2-0 on a power-play goal from freshman Mark Barton (Charlton, Mass.), which was assisted by sophomore Nick Abbene (Merrick, N.Y.) and senior Sam Kent (East Sandwich, Mass.) at 8:59. Just 14 seconds later, the hosts took a 3-0 lead when Mosher scored from junior Tommy Bishop (Chelmsford, Mass.).

Wentworth pulled within 3-1 at 3:24 of the third period on a power-play goal from junior Ethan Weiss (Troy, Mich.), however, Suffolk made it 4-1 when junior Mikhail Bryan (Dayton, Mass.) scored from Bucher and sophomore Brian Brooks (Canton, Mass.) at 9:22. Special teams played a part in the Leopards pulling within 4-2 as junior Paul Filippone, III (Cranston, R.I.) scored on the power play from senior Jake McDonough (Marshfield, Mass.) and junior Angus Johnston (Calgary, Alta.). With sophomore netminder Kenny Graham (Milton, Mass.) pulled, the Rams added an empty-net goal as Bucher scored with 1:05 remaining to make it 5-2.

Junior Michael Levine (Clarendon Hill, Ill.) made 27 saves for Suffolk, while Graham made 17 saves for Wentworth, which had a 29-22 shot advantage.

Wentworth is idle until traveling to Plymouth State on Friday, January 5.
