Hockey Goes on the Offensive in Win Over Becker

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Georgy Gorodetskii (Yekaterinburg, Russia) scored two goals and assisted on two others while freshman Brendan Lloyd (Merrick, N.Y.) found the back of the net twice as the Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team cruised to its fourth straight win with a 6-1 triumph over Becker at the Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center Saturday night.

With the win the Leopards, who matched a season high with six goals, improve to 9-11-3 overall and 7-6-3 in Commonwealth Coast Conference play while the Hawks fall to 4-17-1 (2-13-0).

Gorodetskii put Wentworth ahead at the 3:44 mark of the opening frame as he scored on the power play from senior Jake McDonough (Marshfield, Mass.) and junior Adam Lane (Sarnia, Ont.). Despite holding a 16-6 shot advantage in the first period, that would be the lone goal after 20 minutes of play.

The Leopards tallied three times in the second period, including scoring twice in a span of 11 seconds. Gorodetskii and sophomore Liam McKay (Calgary, Alta.) set up Lloyd for his first of the game at the 5:28 mark to make it 2-0 before McDonough scored from Lane and junior Matthew Kennedy (Mount Pearl, N.L.) at 8:24 of the middle stanza. Lloyd picked up his second of the game when sophomore Jake Hallisey (Quincy, Mass.) won the ensuing faceoff to Gorodetskii who fed Lloyd for the game's fourth goal.

Twenty-three seconds into the third period, Becker ended the shutout bid when sophomore Trey McMillen (Grapevine, Texas) capitalized on a turnover and scored an unassisted tally. Junior Sean Brennan (Stony Point, N.Y.) gave Wentworth a 5-1 lead when he scored from sophomores Nate Chase (Plainfield, Ill.) and Drew DiGeronimo (Fitchburg, Mass.) at the 9:56 mark of the period. Gorodetskii completed the scoring with his second of the contest, assisted by junior Jonny Spada (Glen Rock, N.J.) and senior Cam McLennan (Calgary, Alta.).

Senior Ryan Hubbard (West Roxbury, Mass.) made 24 saves to pick up the win. Sophomore Cody Foster (Saugus, Calif.) made 19 saves in 28:35 of work for Becker, allowing four goals, before giving way to freshman Ryan Clifford (Coventry, R.I.) who made 21 stops in 29:39 of action. Wentworth had a 46-25 shot advantage in the game.

Wentworth closes out the regular season next weekend with a league series against Curry. Game one against the Colonels will be Friday night in Milton, Mass.
