November 7, 2023
EVERETT, Mass. – In non-conference play Tuesday night, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's ice hockey team (3-2) grinded past the visiting Rivier Raiders (1-3-1) by a 5-1 score. Sophomore Jack McGovern (Ancaster, Ont.) earned the win with a 25-save outing.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Leopards got on the board just 50 seconds into the opening frame as senior Josh Faussett (Okemos, Mich.) sent a pass right in front of the net for freshman Gary Claps (Norwalk, Conn.) to pot his first collegiate goal.
- Wentworth doubled their lead five minutes after Claps' tally as sophomore Cole Paredes (Norwalk, Conn.) capitalized on a turnover by the Raiders and sent his point-blank shot past sophomore Will Augustine (Livonia, Mich.).
- The Raiders took advantage of a turnover by the Leopards with 10:50 to go in the first period, cutting the deficit to 2-1 as a shot by sophomore Jack Tos (Burlington, Ont.) squeaked past McGovern.
- One minute after Tos' goal, the Leopards regained their two-goal cushion as a wrister by a streaking sophomore Nikolas Sombrowski (Fernie, B.C.) landed over the shoulder of Augustine, marking a 3-1 score.
- The Leopards added some insurance 14 seconds into the second period as junior Mitch McGinn (Salem, N.H.) finished a rebound chance that was turned to him by graduate student Brendan Young (Lefroy, Ont.), marking a 4-1 score.
- The Raiders pulled their goalie with the man-advantage, presenting a 6-on-4 situation late in the third, but Faussett cashed in on the empty net with 2:40 to go to solidify the Leopards' lead at 5-1.
- Augustine made 21 stops in the loss while McGovern only surrendered one goal on 26 shots.
