Murphy Steps Down as Men's Lacrosse Coach

BOSTON, Mass. – Paul Murphy, the longest tenured men's lacrosse coach at Wentworth Institute of Technology, has announced his resignation from the school, effective immediately.  Director of Athletics Lee Conrad accepted Murphy's resignation.

"I'd like to thank 'Murph' for the last 11 years he has served as our head men's lacrosse coach," said Conrad. "He joined us during a time where the program had three coaches in as many seasons and provided much-needed stability. His dedication and commitment to the student-athletes at Wentworth have been second to none and I wish him luck in the future."

Murphy arrived at Wentworth as the Leopards' fourth head coach in as many seasons in the summer of 2000 and directed the Black & Gold to a 66-84 record over the next 11 seasons, making nine appearances in The Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament and the program's first two ECAC Tournament appearances in 2003 and 2004.  The 2004 squad tied the program record for wins, finishing with a 9-7 mark.

During his 11 seasons he coached 22 all-conference selections, including Dan Turcott '05, the 2005 TCCC Defensive Player of the Year, Mike Wood '05, the program's all-time leading scorer, and Chris Wesche '09, the 2009 TCCC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  Wood and D.J. McBain '01 were both inducted into the Wentworth Hall of Fame.

Prior to joining the Wentworth staff, Murphy spent numerous seasons as a high school head coach in both Massachusetts and Virginia as well as at Merrimack College where he amassed a record of 49-45 from 1987-1995. In 19 seasons as a collegiate head coach, he has a 115-129 record.

The 2011 edition of the Leopards finished the season with a 3-10 record, with three of the 10 losses coming by a single goal.  A search for a replacement will commence immediately. Interested candidates should apply via Wentworth's on-line job portal.
