BOSTON, Mass. – Trailing by a score of 8-5 with 13:49 remaining in the contest, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team scored five straight times – including three in a row from sophomore Ryan Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) – and held off a late rush by UMass Boston to win, 10-9, in non-conference action on Sweeney Field.
The two teams would trade goals in an early span of 1:34 with UMass Boston's Ryan McGoff (Charlestown, Mass.) getting the Beacons on the board first with 10:51 left before Leopard senior Pat Helfrich (North Andover, Mass.) evened the score. Junior Chris Kipp (Scarborough, Maine) gave Wentworth a 2-1 lead with 7:13 left before McGoff tied it at 2-all five minutes later.
Donny Delpha (Walpole, Mass.) and Dom Fichera (Scituate, Mass.) gave the Beacons a 4-2 lead at the break as they scored the lone markers of the second quarter.
UMass Boston scored three of the first four goals in the third quarter to take its largest lead of the game at 7-3 before goals from sophomore Michael Cushera (Waltham, Mass.) junior Steve Glover (Marstons Mills, Mass.) just 49 seconds apart made it 7-5 after 45:00 of play.
McGoff extended the lead to 8-5 with a goal 1:11 into the fourth quarter before the Leopards began their run as Cushera scored with 11:32 left and freshman Nick Parent (Windham, N.H.) scored 6:31 left to make it a one-goal game. Coakley would score three goals in less than a minute to give the Black & Gold a 10-8 lead.
Delpha brought the Beacons back within one with a goal with 1:27 left and the Beacons had the ball with under a minute left. However, a UMass Boston turnover and a successful Leopard clear sealed the win.
Coakley finished with three goals and three assists, while Parent and Cushera had two goals apiece in the win.
Freshman Tim Parlato (Needham, Mass.) had a game-high nine ground balls and dominated the face-off X, winning 17 of 21 draws on the afternoon. Parlato caused four turnovers as well. Junior Jared Proulx (Nashua, N.H.) made seven saves. The Leopards had a 51-28 shot advantage and a 39-37 ground ball advantage.
