BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Steve Glover (Marstons Mills, Mass.) had five goals, sophomore Ryan Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) had three goals and four assists, sophomore Michael Cushera (Waltham, Mass.) had three goals and an assist and sophomore Dillon Lynch (Southwick, Mass.) had two goals and three assists as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team improved to 5-0 with a 20-0 win over Thomas.
The shutout was only the second in program history and the first since a 25-0 win at Franklin Pierce on April 5, 1999.
Wentworth tallied four times in the first quarter with Cushera scoring the first two goals and Coakley and Glover each scoring once. The Leopards took a 9-0 lead at the half after a five-goal second quarter that saw Glover score twice and Cushera, junior Chris Kipp (Scarborough, Maine), and freshman Alec Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) record markers.
Glover added two more in the third as a part of a five-goal outburst that would also see Lynch, Coakley, and senior Connor Swanson (Holden, Mass.) each score.
The Leopards closed out the game with a six-goal final quarter as junior Zack Nicholson scored twice while Coakley had a goal and two assists.
Fourteen different players recorded at least one point and freshman Tim Parlato (Needham, Mass.), who won seven face-offs had seven ground balls. Juniors Sean Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) and Michael Rottler (Derry, N.H.) each had a pair of caused turnovers. Junior Jared Proulx (Nashua, N.H.) made two saves in the first half while classmate Jeff Bathalon (Maynard, Mass.) made one stop in the second half.
Sophomore Matt Davis (Farmington, Maine), who won six face-offs, had a team-high six ground balls for the Terriers, while senior Jesse Morkeski (Damariscotta, Maine), who made 22 saves in 45 minutes of action, collected five ground balls. Freshman Dakota Gendreau (Waterville, Maine) made four saves in the final quarter.
Wentworth held a 67-6 shot advantage and a 54-24 ground ball advantage, while winning 14 of 23 face-offs on the afternoon.
The Leopards open Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Wednesday at the University of New England. Thomas, which falls to 1-2, opens North Atlantic Conference play Friday night at Maine Maritime.
