BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Chris Kipp (Scarborough, Maine) scored three times and junior Steve Glover (Marstons Mills, Mass.) and sophomore Michael Cushera (Waltham, Mass.) scored two goals apiece as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team improved to 8-2 on the season (2-2 Commonwealth Coast Conference) with an 11-6 win over Gordon in CCC action.
The Leopards scored twice in a span of 1:19 as Kipp and freshman Tim Parlato (Needham, Mass.) scored. The Fighting Scots cut the lead to 2-1 on a sophomore Mio Sison (Warren, Mich.) goal. Cushera gave the hosts a 3-1 lead with a goal with 9:08 left to round out the first quarter scoring.
A sophomore Sam Spellman (Lewes, Del.) goal 39 seconds into the second quarter pulled Gordon back within one at 3-2, and, after Kipp made it a 4-2 game, the Fighting Scots pulled back within one on a freshman Roger Evans (Oxford, Pa.) goal.
Wentworth scored the last three goals of the first half as senior Sean Paradis (Pelham, N.H.), Kipp, and Glover all tallied to give the Leopards a 7-3 lead at the break. Glover, sophomore Dillon Lynch (Southwick, Mass.), and freshman Nick Parent (Windham, N.H.) provided the only scoring in the third quarter to extend the Leopard lead to 10-3.
Junior Jeremy Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) scored with 10:02 left in the fourth quarter to make it a 10-4 game before Cushera scored with 5:22 left to round out Wentworth's scoring. Sophomore Matt Dantona (Syosset, N.Y.) and Nelson scored for Gordon to account for the 11-6 final score.
Sophomore Ryan Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) had a pair of assists for the Black & Gold, while Parent and Cushera had single helpers. Glover, Paradis, and Parlato each picked up six ground balls, while junior Jared Proulx (Nashua, N.H.) made nine saves.
Nelson finished with two goals for the Fighting Scots, while Sison had a goal and two assists. Freshman Peter Kovacevic (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won 11 faceoffs and he and sophomore Jordan Heckelmann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) picked up five ground balls apiece. Senior Houston Zemanski (Annapolis, Md.) made 10 saves in the first half, while freshman Cody Greenwald (Albany, N.Y.) made 11 saves in the second half.
Wentworth's eight wins this season equals the amount of wins the Leopards during the 2010-2012 seasons combined. The Leopards are at Curry on Wednesday. Gordon falls to 2-9 (1-3) and hosts the University of New England on Wednesday.
